Chapter 2

The camera feed showed a man standing outside my ruined door with both hands visible.
Not Brandon.
Not Margaret.
Not police.
He wore a dark suit, silver hair, and the exhausted expression of someone carrying a truth too heavy to deliver gently.
Grace’s voice tightened in my ear.
“Olivia, do not open the door until I see his face.”
I turned the tablet toward the camera.
Grace went silent.
Then she whispered, “That’s Daniel Reeves.”
The name meant nothing to me.
“It should,” she said. “He was your father’s private accountant.”
My breath caught.
“My father has been dead for seven years.”
Daniel looked directly at the hallway camera.
“Miss Bennett,” he said, voice calm but urgent, “your father asked me to come if Brandon Hawthorne ever tried to access your personal files.”
Behind me, Brandon’s face drained of color.
Margaret gripped his arm.
“Don’t listen to him,” she snapped. “He’s a thief.”
Daniel’s eyes moved to her.
“No, Mrs. Hawthorne. I was the man you failed to silence.”
The police officer stepped between Brandon and my office.
Grace said, “Open it only with officers present.”
I did.
Daniel entered holding a sealed brown envelope with my father’s initials pressed into red wax.
My hands shook when I took it.
Inside were bank records, trust amendments, and one photograph.
My father standing beside Margaret Hawthorne outside Sterling Point Capital.
Dated six months before his death.
On the back, in his handwriting, were three words.
She knows everything.
Brandon lunged.
The officer grabbed him before he reached me.
“Give me that,” Brandon shouted.
Daniel placed another folder on my desk.
“Your ex-husband was not moving his money through your name, Miss Bennett.”
He looked at Margaret.
“He was moving yours.”
The room went silent.
Grace appeared on my laptop screen, pale with fury.
“What money?”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“The Bennett Trust. Your inheritance. Nearly forty-two million dollars, hidden under Hawthorne shell accounts.”
My knees nearly gave out.
Margaret whispered, “You ungrateful little girl.”
Then my laptop chimed.
A new file uploaded from Sterling Point’s server.
Subject line: Evidence recovered from Brandon’s laptop.

Attached was a video of my father signing nothing.
Because he was already dead.
