Chapter 4

Lucas looked as if the floor had vanished beneath him.

“Anne,” he hissed.

She continued, “Conflict of trust. Potential misrepresentation. I’ll send documentation when we land.”

Richard said something on the other end.

Anne’s eyes never left Lucas.

“Yes,” she replied. “My recommendation is withdrawal.”

Lucas grabbed the armrest so hard his knuckles whitened.

Then Anne said the sentence that made him collapse back into his seat.

“Cancel the Denver contract—my husband just made this personal.”

A silence fell over first class so complete it felt staged.

Anne ended the call.

Lucas stared at her in horror. “Do you understand what you just did?”

Anne nodded. “Yes.”

“That contract was everything.”

“No,” she said quietly. “I was everything. You just confused the two.”

Felicia’s eyes filled with tears. “Lucas, you said she didn’t matter anymore.”

The words hit the aisle like a dropped glass.

Anne slowly turned to Felicia.

Lucas closed his eyes.

Felicia seemed to realize too late what she had revealed.

Anne’s face did not change, but something in her eyes sharpened.

“You said what?” Anne asked.

Felicia swallowed. “I didn’t mean—”

Lucas snapped, “Felicia, stop talking.”

But Felicia was unraveling now. Fear makes people loyal to survival, not lovers.

“He said the marriage was just for appearances,” she said, voice shaking. “He said after the Denver deal closed, he would file for divorce. He said he needed your name for a few more weeks.”

Passengers gasped.

Anne looked at Lucas.

For the first time, he seemed truly small.

“You used me,” she said.

Lucas said nothing.

Anne nodded slowly, as if confirming a figure in a report.

Then she returned to her seat.

The rest of the flight passed like a funeral.

When the plane landed in Denver, two men in suits were waiting at the gate. Lucas saw them before Anne did.

His expression changed from dread to confusion.

“Who are they?” Felicia whispered.

Anne stepped into the jet bridge, phone in hand.

One of the men approached her first.

“Mrs. Perry?”

Anne frowned. “Yes?”

He showed a badge.

“My name is Daniel Cross. Federal Corporate Fraud Division. We need to speak with your husband.”

Lucas went pale. “What?”

Anne froze.

This was not what she had expected.

The second man turned to Lucas. “Mr. Perry, you’re being detained for questioning regarding falsified vendor accounts, forged compliance records, and suspected wire fraud connected to the Denver logistics proposal.”

Felicia let out a strangled sound.

Lucas looked at Anne with wild accusation. “What did you do?”

Anne stared back, stunned. “I made a phone call.”

Daniel Cross’s expression softened slightly. “Actually, Mrs. Perry, we’ve been investigating him for four months. Your call confirmed he was traveling under false business pretenses today.”

Anne’s mouth went dry.

Lucas shook his head. “Anne, listen to me—”
