PART 2

I carried Chloe to the hotel across the street with her face tucked against my neck.

She didn’t ask where we were going. She only whispered, “Mommy, I was good.”

Those four words nearly broke me.

“You were perfect,” I said, wrapping my coat tighter around her. “And you are never going back to that balcony.”

Upstairs, in a warm room with clean sheets, I ordered soup, fruit, and hot chocolate. Chloe ate slowly at first, as if afraid someone might take the food away. When she finally fell asleep beside me, one tiny hand still gripped my sleeve.

Only then did I call my attorney, Nora Bennett.

She answered on the second ring.

“Rachel?”

“I need emergency custody. Tonight if possible.”

Her voice changed immediately. “What happened?”

I told her everything.

By morning, Nora had already filed the papers. My credit cards were frozen. The monthly transfers stopped. David called thirty-one times before leaving his first voicemail.

“Rachel, don’t overreact. Mom feels terrible. Come home and we’ll talk.”

The second voicemail came from Carol.

“You’re punishing a whole family over a child’s tantrum.”

I saved both.

At ten, Nora met me in the hotel lobby with a folder and a private investigator named Marcus Reed. He placed a tablet on the table.

“We reviewed the apartment building’s security logs,” he said. “This wasn’t the first time Chloe was left outside.”

My hand tightened around my coffee cup.

“How many times?”

Marcus hesitated.

Nora’s face softened. “Rachel…”

“Tell me.”

“Seventeen recorded incidents in the last two months.”

The room blurred.

Then Marcus swiped to another file.

“There’s more. The money you sent for childcare wasn’t being used for Chloe. Large withdrawals were made every week from an account in your husband’s name.”

“Withdrawals for what?”

Marcus looked at Nora before answering.

“Payments to a woman named Brielle Mason.”

My breath caught.

I had heard that name once before.

David had called her a coworker.

Before I could speak, my phone buzzed with a message from Vanessa.

You should’ve checked the bedroom closet before running away.

Attached was a photo.

Inside our closet sat a packed suitcase, Chloe’s birth certificate, and two one-way tickets to Florida.

One ticket was for David.

The other was for my daughter.
