Chapter 24 - THE DAY MEADOW CUT MY HAIR

I was fifty-two when Meadow cut my hair.

Not professionally.

Badly.

She was twenty-six and helping me before a charity dinner.

I complained my ends looked terrible.

She lifted scissors.

“Trust me.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Coward.”

“You have history.”

She stared.

Then laughed so hard she had to sit down.

The joke surprised both of us.

For years clippers and hair were loaded objects.

Now she could make the joke.

I handed her scissors.

“Two inches.”

She cut three.

“You’re disowned.”

“Trust?”

“Independent. Nice try.”

We laughed again.

My hair looked uneven.

I wore it anyway.

Meadow had become a landscape architect.

Not because of Lake Marston initially.

She liked parks.

Public spaces.

Water.

Her trust gave her options but did not select a career.

She worked for a regional planning firm and recused from projects involving Marston property.

Conflict rules became ordinary.

Dustin attended her college graduation.

Sat three rows behind me.

We spoke briefly.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

No hostility.

No reunion.

He had built a modest life doing accounting support for a manufacturing company.

No fiduciary authority.

No development deals.

He remarried once.

His wife knew the history.

Meadow met her later.

Judith remained alive.

No contact with Meadow.

Her choice.

At thirty, Meadow changed that.

One supervised meeting.

I did not attend.

She came home thoughtful.

“What happened?”

“She’s old.”

“That tends to happen.”

“She cried before I said anything.”

“Okay.”

“I hated that.”

“Why?”

“Because then I felt like I had to comfort her.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She told Judith:

“You cut my hair because you wanted my mother to look violent.”

Judith answered:

“Yes.”

“You called me a dog.”

“Yes.”

“You held my face.”

“Yes.”

“Do you remember me saying no?”

Judith cried.

“Yes.”

Meadow’s final question:

“If Mom had never come in, when would you have stopped?”

Judith could not answer.

That became Meadow’s answer about future contact.

She did not schedule another meeting.

May you like

Not punishment.

Information.
