Chapter 22 - CHLOE READS THE FIRST VIDEO

At eighteen, Chloe requested access to the USB evidence.
We did not hand it over casually.
The government had returned an authenticated copy after appeals ended.
Rachel—semi-retired by then—helped establish what Chloe could view without exposing third-party protected data.
We began with Harrison’s direct videos.
She watched:
Sarah… don’t trust Victoria.
She paused.
“You look awful.”
Harrison laughed nervously.
“Thank you.”
“No, like actually terrified.”
“I was.”
She watched the video where he apologized for making her keep secrets.
Her face changed.
“You knew it was wrong already.”
“By then.”
“Why didn’t you just tell Mom before?”
He answered:
“I wanted control over how I fixed the problem.”
Chloe looked at me.
“That’s your therapy sentence.”
“It became one.”
She watched no kidnapping footage.
Did not need it.
No raw room audio.
No blood photographs.
Evidence could prove history without becoming family entertainment.
She asked whether she could read Victoria’s messages.
Later.
Maybe.
At the end, she asked:
“Can I destroy the USB?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Legal archive.”
“Can I destroy our copy?”
We looked at Rachel.
She confirmed no legal requirement to retain our duplicate because official records existed.
Chloe held the small black drive.
The object that had once made Victoria pound on our door.
We took it to an electronics recycling service that documented secure destruction.
No fire.
No hammer.
No symbolic lake.
Professional shredding.
The technician asked if we wanted a certificate.
Chloe said:
“Sure.”
May you like
Then lost the certificate two months later.
Perfect.
