Chapter 2

By the time police arrived, Lena had changed her story twice.

First, Travis was a stranger.

Then he was someone she “might have met once.”

Then she said she was too shaken to remember.

Darius said nothing.

He gave officers Maya’s phone recording, his own basement recording, and a precise statement. No yelling. No accusations. Just facts.

Maya stayed that night with Darius at his parents’ house. His mother, Vera, made soup, set clean pajamas on the bed, and asked no questions until Maya was ready.

Darius spent the next three days building a file.

Phone records first.

One number appeared again and again.

Travis Klein.

Eleven months of calls.

Then the bank statements.

Restaurants Darius had never visited.

Hotel charges on dates he had been on base exercises.

Then the emails.

Lena had created a hidden account, but one forwarding rule sent copies into the old family inbox.

On October 9th, at 4:17 p.m., Lena wrote:

Come over tonight. She is in her room and she won’t bother us. He is not coming back anytime soon.

Two hours later:

Come through the back gate. The latch is open. Don’t be loud when you get to the door.

Darius read those lines twice.

Not because he doubted them.

Because he needed one extra second to accept what they meant.

Lena had not just betrayed him.

She had treated Maya as an obstacle in her own home.

Detective Anita Flores received Darius’s file on a Tuesday morning.

She had worked sixteen years with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and had learned to recognize the difference between a messy family situation and a clean set of facts trying to survive a messy family situation.

Darius placed the folder on her desk and said, “Everything is indexed.”

Flores opened it.

For twenty minutes, she said nothing.

Phone logs.

Bank statements.

Email timestamps.

Screenshots.

Calendar overlaps.
