Chapter 2

Fear always chose the stronger side.
A gust of wind rolled one cardboard box across the driveway.
Its contents spilled onto the wet stone.
Inside were children's storybooks.
A tiny knitted blanket.
An unopened music box.
Isabella glanced toward them before raising an eyebrow.
"You even kept those?"
Richard sighed impatiently.
"Throw them away."
"They're useless now."
The words landed harder than any scream could have.
Elena slowly walked toward the scattered belongings.
Not to save the expensive clothes.
Not to rescue the jewelry.
She carefully picked up the little music box.
Her fingers brushed away droplets of rain.
She held it for a long second.
A memory crossed her face.
Then disappeared.
Richard watched impatiently.
"I don't have all night."
He reached into his pocket.
Without another word, he removed a silver house key.
The same key Elena had once carried proudly after their wedding.
The key to the villa they had designed together.
The place they had called forever.
Richard looked at it once.
Then dropped it onto the marble.
The sharp metallic sound echoed through the silent entrance.
"Take your things."
He pointed toward the open gates.
"And disappear."
Nobody moved.
Even Isabella stopped smiling for a heartbeat.
Not because she pitied Elena.
Because she expected tears.
Begging.
Anger.
Anything.
Instead—
Elena simply looked down at the fallen key.
The cold wind lifted strands of her hair.
Her face remained strangely peaceful.
She bent slowly.
Everyone expected her to pick up the key.
She didn't.
Instead she picked up another photograph.
One showing happier days.
Richard smiling.
Both of them laughing beside the unfinished villa during construction.
She stared at it.
Then quietly folded it once.
Twice.
Before placing it inside her old travel bag.
Richard frowned.
"What?"
"No speech?"
"No tears?"
"I expected more."
Elena finally looked up.
Their eyes met across the marble stairs.
"I didn't come to beg."
Her voice barely rose above the wind.
Soft.
Controlled.
Certain.
Those five words unsettled something deep inside Richard.
For the first time all evening...
his confidence cracked.
Only for a second.
Only enough for Isabella to notice.
She squeezed his arm.
"Ignore her."
"She's bluffing."
Richard forced another smile.
"Bluffing?"
"You've lost everything."
"You don't even own the clothes you're wearing."
Still—
Elena remained silent.
She looked past both of them.
Not at the villa.
Not at the lights.
Toward the dark road beyond the gates.
As though she were waiting.
Richard followed her gaze.
Nothing.
Just empty road disappearing into darkness.
He laughed.
"Still expecting someone?"
"No one is coming."
"You've been abandoned."
The servants exchanged uneasy glances.
Something about Elena's calm felt unnatural.
People who truly lost everything usually broke.
She hadn't.
She hadn't even defended herself.
She hadn't denied the accusations.
She hadn't argued about Isabella.
She simply waited.
The wind grew colder.
The trees along the entrance swayed gently.
Far away...
almost too distant to notice...
a pair of white lights appeared.
May you like
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
