Chapter 13 - THE LIE SHE WANTED FROM HIM
Daniel showed me the message because his therapist told him secrecy was how he got here.
MARGARET:
You need to tell them Lily kicked me before I reacted.
DANIEL:
She didn’t.
MARGARET:
You were looking down.
DANIEL:
Livestream shows it.
MARGARET:
Angle is bad.
DANIEL:
No.
MARGARET:
I am your mother.
DANIEL:
And she is my daughter.
I read the final line twice.
Then put the phone down.
“That should have happened at the banquet.”
“I know.”
No reward.
Still important.
Margaret replied:
After everything I’ve done for you.
Daniel:
That sentence is the problem.
Progress.
She stopped speaking to him for three weeks.
He grieved.
That surprised me.
“You miss her?”
“Yes.”
“She tried to make you lie about Lily.”
“Yes.”
“You still miss her.”
“She’s my mother.”
Complicated.
Human.
I understood more than I wanted.
My own counseling made me confront a different problem.
I loved telling the story of shoving Margaret into the cake.
Friends reacted.
“Good for you.”
“She deserved it.”
“I would’ve done worse.”
Each reaction gave me a small chemical reward.
The counselor asked:
“What did Lily learn from that moment?”
“That I defended her.”
“What else?”
“That hitting is how adults answer hitting.”
I hated him.
Professionally.
He continued:
“You can condemn Margaret without turning your own violence into a family legend.”
That stayed.
I stopped joking about the cake.
When Lily eventually asked:
“Was Grandma covered in frosting?”
I answered yes.
“Funny?”
“No.”
“But a little?”
I sighed.
“A little visually. Not what happened around it.”
She giggled.
Two years old becoming three.
Memory fragmentary.
Good.
The family-court evaluator completed the report.
Recommendation:
Shared legal custody with specific medical safeguards.
Lily’s primary residence temporarily with me while Daniel continued rebuilding trust.
Increasing parenting time if boundaries held.
Margaret no contact absent separate therapeutic assessment and Lily-centered review.
No finding that I was mentally unstable.
No finding Daniel was physically dangerous to Lily.
Strong criticism of both parents’ conflict behavior, particularly my retaliation and Daniel’s preplanned provocation.
Balanced.
Annoying.
Credible.
Margaret called the report biased.
Of course.
Then the FAMILY STABILITY cloud archive produced one final deleted file.
