Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY BEGINS TO SPEAK
Grace attempted to coordinate the witnesses before detectives interviewed them.
She sent a family group message at 12:14 a.m.
Everyone needs to remember that Elena became aggressive first. Jackson raised the plate only to protect himself.
Natalie screenshotted it before Grace deleted the message.
Aaron replied:
The camera may have caught it.
Grace:
Harold controls the system.
Harold did not control the backup.
The Beverly Hills estate’s insurance policy required off-site security storage.
The dining-room camera preserved the entire confrontation.
It showed my hands resting beside my plate.
It showed Jackson standing.
It showed him throwing the plate from nearly ten feet away.
It showed Grace remaining seated while I bled.
It also showed Aaron reaching for the document folder before anyone called for help.
The family’s silence no longer looked passive.
It looked coordinated.
Several relatives cooperated immediately after viewing the footage.
Jackson’s aunt Marjorie admitted Grace had discussed moving into the apartment for months.
A cousin named Peter disclosed that Jackson offered him a consulting payment if he told police I had been drinking.
I had consumed sparkling water all evening.
The children’s babysitter heard Grace instruct the staff not to call an ambulance unless I lost consciousness.
Harold provided the office-safe code.
He also turned over a second ledger.
For seven years, Grace had controlled most of the family’s finances.
Harold knew she paid Jackson’s debts.
He claimed he did not know she used Northline money.
But the ledger carried his initials beside several transfers.
Simone did not allow him to rename participation as weakness.
“You signed.”
“I was trying to keep my family together.”
“You helped them steal from your daughter-in-law.”
His shoulders fell.
“Yes.”
Harold agreed to cooperate.
Not because he suddenly became courageous.
Because the evidence gave him nowhere left to hide.
Grace called me from another number while I remained in the hospital.
“Elena, this can still be contained.”
I ended the call.
She left a voicemail.
“Jackson made a terrible mistake. But if you proceed, the company investigation will affect innocent relatives.”
The same relatives who had received fake vendor money.
A second voicemail followed.
“You will regret turning your husband against you.”
Jackson had struck me.
Grace still described me as the person turning.
The protective order barred both of them from contacting me.
Three days later, Northline’s independent board held an emergency meeting.
Jackson appeared through his attorney.
His face was controlled again.
The angry man from dinner had been replaced by the polished executive he showed investors.
He accused me of using a marital argument to seize corporate power.
I remained at the hospital hotel with Simone and Alan.
Northline’s board chair, Evelyn Park, opened the meeting.
“Mrs. Brooks already controlled this company. The question is whether Mr. Brooks misused the authority delegated to him.”
The forensic auditor presented the vendor records.
The title-company filing.
The forged loan application.
The family planning audio.
The dinner documents.
Then the assault video.
Jackson’s attorney objected.
“This board is not a criminal court.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Correct. We are determining whether an officer remains fit to access company funds.”
Jackson spoke directly to me.
“You are letting one bad moment erase our entire marriage.”
“One moment did not create the forged documents.”
“You knew my business was struggling.”
“I did not know you were stealing from mine.”
“I intended to repay everything.”
“With money borrowed against my property.”
“We are married.”
“That sentence is not a deed.”
The board voted unanimously.
Jackson’s employment was terminated for cause.
His deferred compensation was frozen pending restitution claims.
Aaron’s vendor companies were removed.
Every Brooks family contract entered independent review.
Northline remained open.
The employees were paid.
