Chapter 25

Chapter 25 - THE LAST FINANCIAL FIGHT
One issue remained.
The bank’s judgment lien against Brian’s share of the house.
Their repayment plan had begun.
Brian wanted refinance in two years to pay it off.
Mortgage lender required settlement.
Melissa worried they would have to sell.
Brian asked me—through counsel, not directly—whether I would accept discounted lump-sum restitution if they sold house and used proceeds.
This was not asking for my money.
It was asking me to take less.
Current restitution owed to me after Melissa payments and Brian-related direct reimbursements:
Around $24,000 remaining? Need distinguish. Brian restitution maybe direct legal costs/unauthorized debits beyond bank. Let's say he owed me $18,400 separate from bank after credits.
Offer:
$15,000 lump sum now.
Close my restitution claim.
Reason:
Selling house would produce limited equity after bank judgment and mortgage.
I considered.
Did I want every dollar?
Yes.
Did I want five more years of monthly reminders?
No.
Hannah said:
“This is your choice. Discount is not forgiveness.”
I accepted $16,500 after negotiation.
Why?
Finality.
Payment came from sale?
Brian and Melissa decided to sell.
That surprised me.
The house had become too expensive and too attached to disaster.
They listed.
Sold modestly above mortgage.
Paid:
Mortgage.
Bank judgment negotiated payoff.
Closing costs.
My restitution lump sum.
Some left for smaller townhouse down payment.
No homelessness.
No ruin.
They downsized.
The dining room where dog bowl sat became someone else’s.
I never returned.
When sale closed, Brian sent:
House sold today.
I answered:
Okay.
Then:
I’m sorry I ever told you to get out.
I stared.
Then replied:
You gave me good advice accidentally.
He wrote:
Fair.
That was perhaps the first joke between us since before birthday.
Small.
Then Melissa completed restitution too by using her share of sale proceeds.
My account received final amount.
Hannah emailed:
M.R. settlement satisfied.
Bank correction complete.
Credit line closed.
Civil matters resolved.
I read three times.
No open balance.
No recurring charge.
No agent authority.
No litigation.
The financial climax ended not with Brian broke and begging.
With a house sale, checks, release documents, and smaller lives.
That was enough.
Then I closed the special restitution account.
Transferred money into brokerage.
Not as victory fund.
Just savings.
Ellen would have approved.
Good locks.
May you like
Good records.
Boring peace.
