Chapter 6

My old phone contained sixty-three recordings.
Some lasted seconds.
Others more than an hour.
The sound quality varied.
Bars scraping.
Footsteps.
Breathing.
Threats.
Silence.
The first recording began the night Marcus pushed me into the cage.
His voice:
“You need somewhere safe until you stop making accusations.”
My voice was clearer then.
“What accusations?”
“That I moved money.”
“You did.”
A blow against the bars.
Then Marcus:
“You’re going to learn what evidence looks like when no one believes the witness.”
The second night captured Lorraine entering.
“Your father made the mistake of giving women independent money,” she said. “It makes them disobedient.”
Another recording captured them discussing food.
MARCUS: She needs enough for the child.
LORRAINE: Pregnancy takes from the mother first. That helps us.
MARCUS: How long?
LORRAINE: Longer than you think.
The audio did not prove Lorraine had medical expertise.
It proved she participated in a plan to starve me while preserving the pregnancy.
A recording from day nine captured her denying water until I said:
“Marcus owns me.”
She made me repeat it three times.
Day eleven captured Marcus forcing the tablet against the bars.
Day thirteen captured him discussing the trust with David Cole.
David’s voice came through speakerphone:
“If she dies before distribution, the trust follows its own terms. You may not receive principal.”
Marcus:
“The child does.”
David:
“Through a guardian and institutional trustee.”
Marcus:
“Then we remove the institution.”
David claimed later he did not know I was confined.
The recording supported that he knew Marcus contemplated my death and sought control through Sophie.
Whether that became criminal participation required more evidence.
Day fifteen captured Lorraine.
“Claire warned Elena about you.”
Marcus:
“Maya?”
“No. Their mother.”
My mother had died six years earlier.
Lorraine continued:
“She knew your temper. Elena still married you.”
I had never heard that before.
My mother met Marcus twice before her cancer worsened.
She told Maya privately that something about him felt rehearsed.
Maya did not tell me because I was in love and our mother had little evidence.
The family carried many silences.
Not all malicious.
Some built from fear of interfering.
Marcus exploited every one.
The final recording captured the dinner night.
Water breaking.
Trust documents.
The threat with the knife.
The door exploding.
My phone continued recording after Detective Hart collected it.
His voice:
“Evidence device received from victim’s hand. Screen cracked. Battery at one percent.”
Then the phone died.
May you like
The last sound was not Marcus.
It was someone finally naming me as the victim instead of the problem.
