Chapter 19 - THE TRIAL

The prosecutor opened with one sentence:
“This case is about a son who turned caregiving authority into control.”
Defense:
“This case is about a frightened family caregiver whose bad decisions are being reinterpreted as a criminal master plan.”
Both contained something true.
First witnesses:
Police.
Body cameras.
Scene.
Padlock.
Hose.
Mud.
My condition.
No dramatics.
Then hospital doctor.
Bruises.
Cold exposure.
Sprained wrist.
No major injury.
Cognitive screen normal.
Defense:
A normal ER screen does not rule out intermittent impairment.
Doctor:
Correct.
Good.
Then Rachel’s 911 call.
Audio.
“I think my neighbor’s mother is locked in a dog kennel.”
Dispatcher.
“Is anyone armed?”
“No. He has a hose. He’s yelling.”
Then:
“I’m going outside.”
Dispatcher told her wait if unsafe.
She didn’t.
Defense would use.
Then video.
The courtroom watched.
Marcus:
“She fell.”
Rachel:
“Then unlock it.”
Marcus:
“Tell her you’re fine.”
Me:
“I am not fine.”
Rachel kicking cage.
Marcus raising hose.
Rachel kicking him.
Sirens.
I did not look at jury.
I looked at table.
Then defense cross Rachel.
“You disobeyed dispatcher.”
“Yes.”
“You entered private property.”
“Yes.”
“You damaged a cage.”
“Yes.”
“You kicked Mr. Carter.”
“Yes.”
“You had already decided he was abusing his mother.”
“I believed what I was seeing was abuse.”
“You’re not trained in elder-care assessment.”
“No.”
“You could have waited.”
“I believed Helen was cold and trapped.”
“Police were less than two minutes away.”
“I didn’t know that.”
Good.
Then:
“Marcus never hit Helen in your video.”
“No.”
“Never struck her with hose.”
“No.”
“Never threatened to kill her.”
“No.”
“Thank you.”
Rachel looked at prosecutor.
No rehabilitation needed.
Truth.
Then neighbor messages.
Marcus preconditioning.
Defense:
Concerned son warning neighbors.
Possible.
Then medical records.
Dr. Shah.
No dementia.
Son-reported concerns.
Some true incidents.
The jury saw complexity.
Then bank.
Altered POA.
HELOC.
Defense objected moral spillover.
Judge instructed separate counts/evidence purposes.
Good.
Then digital forensic analyst.
Broad POA created after limited authorization.
Backyard draft timestamps.
This was heavy.
Defense attacked timestamps:
Cloud sync can alter metadata.
Analyst explained version history and corroborating local logs.
Could not claim metaphysical certainty.
High confidence.
Then draft text displayed.
Mother falls.
Kennel.
Hose.
Tell neighbor she’s fine.
Written before event.
