Chapter 12

The divorce court did not give me everything in one afternoon.

The marital home had equity.

Retirement accounts required division.

Debts had to be classified.

Some money could be traced.

Some had disappeared through fees, cash withdrawals, and failed transfers.

The North Carolina account contained $214,000 when frozen.

Part came from our savings.

Part from disability benefits.

Part from fake reimbursements.

Forensic accountants spent months allocating ownership.

The court awarded me exclusive possession of the Richmond home during proceedings.

Later, the final settlement transferred Colin’s interest to me as part of the property division and restitution structure.

He did not simply “sign it away” because I possessed a dramatic video.

Legal rights moved through orders, valuations, negotiated credits, and findings of dissipation.

I received primary legal and physical custody.

Colin’s contact began through letters reviewed by the children’s therapist.

Later, supervised video calls became possible.

Nathan refused the first three.

Lily agreed to one and remained silent for most of it.

Colin said:

“I’m sorry you saw me walking.”

Lily looked at the therapist.

Then asked:

“Are you sorry you walked or sorry I saw?”

Colin’s face changed.

“I’m sorry I lied.”

“Why didn’t you tell us you were better?”

“I was scared.”

“Of us?”

“No.”

“Then why did we have to be sad?”

He began crying.

The therapist stopped him when his emotions placed pressure on Lily to comfort him.

Children do not owe relief to adults who confess harm.

After the call, Lily said:

“He looked like Dad.”

“He is Dad.”

“But not the same.”

“No.”

“Which one is real?”

The question followed us through years.

“The man who was injured was real. The man who recovered was real. The man who lied was real. People can contain all of those truths.”

“That’s worse.”

“Sometimes complexity is.”

Nathan eventually wrote Colin a letter.

You made me lift your wheelchair into Grandma’s van after you could walk. I hurt my back doing it. You watched me.

Colin replied:

May you like

I remember. I told myself accepting help made the lie believable. I used your love as evidence. I am sorry.

Nathan did not answer for a year.
