Chapter 19 - MASON ASKS ABOUT GRANDPA DOMINIC
Mason saw the updated foundation website.
There was a photograph of Dominic.
"That Grandpa?"
"Great-grandpa."
"The cards man."
"Yes."
"Was he bad?"
I had been asked versions of that question too often.
I sat beside him.
"He did some good things."
"Like?"
"Started the sports charity. Paid for kids who couldn’t afford equipment. Helped people find jobs."
"And bad?"
"He believed hurting boys sometimes made them stronger."
"Like Trent?"
"Yes."
Mason thought.
"Did he hit you with metal?"
"No."
"Then Trent worse."
Children rank.
I said:
"Trent made his own choice."
"Did Grandpa make him?"
"No."
"Did Grandma Patricia?"
"No."
"Then why everybody says family?"
There.
Because family was easier than responsibility.
"They shouldn’t."
He nodded.
Then moved a chess knight.
"Check."
It was not check.
I did not correct him immediately.
He caught it himself.
"Never mind."
