Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO DID NOT COME BACK

Skylar spent that night in a hotel near the water, lying on top of the blanket because even soft fabric hurt her neck.

Her face throbbed.

Her hands shook whenever a door closed nearby.

Her phone filled with messages from numbers she recognized and numbers she did not.

Derek.

Suzanne.

Derek’s mother.

Suzanne’s friend.

A cousin who had not spoken to Skylar since the wedding but now had opinions about forgiveness.

Skylar did not reply.

Attorney Elena Salazar told her not to.

Elena was a family lawyer recommended by the hospital social worker.

She had sharp eyes, silver hair, and the kind of calm that came from watching too many women apologize for surviving.

“From this moment,” Elena said, sitting across from Skylar in the hotel lobby, “silence is not weakness. It is strategy.”

Skylar nodded.

Her face was half-covered with sterile dressing.

She felt ridiculous.

Exposed.

Like everyone could see the exact shape of her humiliation.

Elena slid a folder across the table.

“We file for temporary injunction, exclusive use of your property, preservation of financial records, and divorce. We also notify your bank of potential coercive financial abuse involving your sister-in-law.”

Skylar looked down at the papers.

“Can he stay in the apartment?”

“Not if the court grants the emergency order.”

“He’ll say he has nowhere to go.”

Elena’s mouth tightened.

“He should have considered shelter before weaponizing yours.”

That sentence stayed with Skylar.

Shelter.

The apartment had been her first real shelter.

She had bought it after years of roommates, cheap rentals, and one childhood home where bills were whispered about like illnesses.

She remembered signing the deed.

Standing alone in the empty living room.

Eating takeout noodles on the floor because she had no furniture yet.

Promising herself no one would ever make her feel unsafe under a roof she paid for.

Then Derek arrived with flowers.

Then love.

Then pressure.

Then Suzanne.

Then the coffee.

Elena reviewed the timeline.

The previous loans to Suzanne.

The texts demanding money.

The times Derek threatened divorce if Skylar refused.

The joint account transfers.

The purchases Skylar did not authorize.

The way Derek called the apartment “my house” after moving in with two suitcases and debt.

“Do you have messages?” Elena asked.

“Yes.”

“Bank records?”

“Yes.”

“Doorbell camera?”

Skylar froze.

Then slowly lifted her head.

“Yes.”

The kitchen had a camera.

Not hidden.

A small home security camera above the pantry shelf, installed after a delivery theft the year before.

Derek knew about it.

But Derek forgot anything that did not serve him.

Skylar opened the app with stiff fingers.

There it was.

The breakfast.

Derek shouting.

The mug leaving his hand.

Skylar running to the sink.

His voice afterward.

“See what you made me do.”

Elena watched without changing expression.

Then she said, “Send me that immediately.”

Skylar did.

Elena saved it.

Backed it up.

Then looked at her client.

“This changes everything.”

The emergency hearing happened the next afternoon.

Derek appeared in a navy suit and wounded expression.

He had always been good in public.

He spoke softly to the clerk.

Held doors open.

Called the judge “Your Honor” with perfect humility.

Then Elena played the video.

Derek’s face emptied.

The courtroom watched him throw the coffee.

Watched Skylar run to the sink.

Heard him say, “See what you made me do.”

The judge did not need a speech.

He granted the temporary injunction.

Ordered Derek to vacate the apartment immediately.

Barred him from contacting Skylar.

Ordered him not to transfer, destroy, or remove marital or personal property.

Directed him to surrender keys under police supervision.

Scheduled a follow-up hearing.

Derek stood.

“Your Honor, where am I supposed to go?”

The judge looked at him.

“Not to the home of the woman you burned.”

Skylar closed her eyes.

Not in relief.

Relief was too large.

May you like

This was something smaller.

A door opening.
