Chapter 5 - THE FALSE NOTARY
The notary was Thomas Bell, a mobile professional who handled hospital and elder-care documents.
He claimed he met me twice.
Once in my bedroom.
Once inside a parked car.
I remembered neither.
His journal contained my signature and thumbprint.
The thumbprint matched me.
Forensic analysts could not explain it immediately.
Then Clara remembered my passport renewal appointment.
Gwendolyn accompanied me.
She carried an ink pad for “another form.”
I pressed my thumb onto several cards without reading each one.
The notary pages may have received transferred prints.
Another possibility was that I signed while sedated.
Toxicology could not reconstruct months of dosing.
The investigators examined Thomas Bell’s records.
He had notarized more than forty documents for Holt Transitional Services.
Several involved older homeowners entering private care.
Some families confirmed valid consent.
Three could not.
One woman died before the review.
Another man’s niece controlled his property.
A pattern did not automatically prove every act fraudulent.
It demanded scrutiny.
Thomas denied conspiracy.
He said Gwendolyn presented herself as a licensed care coordinator and Lucas’s wife.
“She was credible,” he said.
“Did you speak with Florence alone?” Detective Ellis asked.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Family said she became agitated.”
“Did you assess whether she understood?”
“I asked her if she knew her name.”
“That is not property capacity.”
Thomas’s commission was suspended pending investigation.
He surrendered devices.
Messages with Gwendolyn included:
Need minimal engagement. She tires quickly.
Thomas: If she cannot answer, I cannot notarize.
Gwendolyn: She answers when Lucas’s name is mentioned.
Thomas: Is Lucas present?
Gwendolyn: His authority is enough.
Lucas had never given authority.
His identity created credibility even in absence.
The county recorder froze the pending deed.
Meridian Ridge paused the purchase.
The company refused to return the advance until ownership was determined.
Maya Lawson, my new attorney, filed civil claims for fraud, elder exploitation, identity theft, and cancellation of every authorization.
She advised me to freeze accounts and execute new limited documents.
I was afraid to sign anything.
“Not signing is also a decision,” she said. “We can slow down.”
We reviewed each page aloud.
Clara became temporary emergency contact.
An independent fiduciary took limited control of disputed accounts.
Lucas received no authority.
He accepted the arrangement publicly.
Privately, he said:
“You don’t trust me.”
“I don’t trust what happened around you.”
“I saved you.”
“You arrived during one attack.”
“I stopped her.”
“Yes.”
“That should matter.”
“It matters. It does not answer everything.”
He left the hotel angry.
The next morning, a gossip site published a video showing him slap Gwendolyn.
The caption read:
EXECUTIVE HUSBAND ATTACKS WIFE DURING DISPUTE OVER ELDERLY MOTHER’S MILLIONS.
Lucas worked as regional operations director for a medical-supply company.
His employer placed him on leave.
Gwendolyn’s lawyer filed a domestic-violence complaint.
Lucas admitted the slap.
He said he acted to stop ongoing abuse.
The complete video did not exist.
Only his witness statement, my account, broken pitcher, injuries, and physical evidence.
Police had photographed Gwendolyn’s handprint around my jaw.
Her skin cells were recovered beneath my nails.
The prosecutor considered the context.
Lucas was charged with misdemeanor assault but not detained.
He did not deny his hand.
He accepted that stopping her did not automatically justify striking rather than pulling her away.
The legal case became another way Gwendolyn portrayed herself as victim.
She could be a victim of Lucas’s slap and perpetrator against me.
The court would not need to choose one identity.
Then a nurse from Briar Haven contacted Maya.
She had copied an internal note before management removed it.
