Chapter 22 - THE CABINET DOOR

The cracked cabinet door remained in the old house until it sold.
Ethan refused to repair it.
Why?
“Evidence at first.”
Then?
“I didn’t know.”
New owners renovated the kitchen.
Cabinet removed.
Thrown away.
No museum.
No relic.
Good.
Years later Ethan handed me the skillet.
He had kept it in storage.
I stared.
“Why do you have this?”
“You left it.”
“I left a lot.”
“Do you want it?”
I picked it up.
Heavy.
Same black iron.
The handle still slightly rough.
My body remembered before my mind.
Grant advancing.
Ethan staring at it instead of me.
Cabinet cracking.
“Throw it away.”
Ethan nodded.
Then Sophie, eight, entered.
“What’s that?”
“A skillet.”
“Can I have it for camping?”
I looked at Ethan.
He looked at me.
I started laughing.
Sophie frowned.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Ethan asked:
“Claire?”
I held the skillet.
For years I had thought of it as a weapon.
Before that, it cooked cornbread.
After?
It could cook again.
“Fine.”
We cleaned it.
Reseasoned it.
Sophie used it at a campground with Ethan that summer.
He sent me a photo of pancakes.
No caption about healing.
Thank God.
Objects do not need speeches to change meaning.
The cabinet disappeared.
May you like
The skillet stayed.
That felt right.
