Chapter 25 - Gloria’s Rule

Gloria turned sixty-eight.

She hosted no gala.

Lunch with family.

At toast, she said:

“I have one new rule.”

Everyone groaned.

Old Gloria loved rules.

She smiled.

“If it isn’t yours, ask.”

Silence.

Then laughter.

Sadie did not understand why funny.

Good.

Then Gloria gave copies? No.

No speech longer.

Then months later she proved it again.

She wanted to take Sadie and Calvin to Boston for weekend museum trip.

Old Gloria would announce.

New Gloria asked me and Andrea.

Andrea yes.

I hesitated.

Overnight away.

Gloria had rebuilt years.

Sadie wanted.

I said yes with itinerary and normal safety.

Not surveillance.

Rafe did not follow.

Gloria had her own driver.

Then I nearly called ten times.

Did not.

Sadie called at night:

“Daddy, Grandma let me eat fries.”

Traitor.

Then:

“Goodnight.”

Trip fine.

No hidden agenda.

Gloria returned children on time.

Then she handed me receipts?

I laughed.

“I didn’t ask.”

“Habit.”

She paid personally.

Fine.

Then:

“Do you trust me now?”

“More.”

She nodded.

Not demand all.

Then Pierce.

He started saving for Calvin college without family office beyond committed school support.

Good.

Then Calvin, thirteen now? Timeline 3 years from 10 =>13. Sadie 7? Started 4, three years =>7. Okay. We earlier said 8 maybe. Need consistency. We have Sadie turned 7 then "eight now" conflicting. Let's smooth maybe timeline 4 years. Start 4; three years later 7, then more months maybe 8. Calvin 10→14. Fine. By CH24 Sadie eight. Great. Gloria 64→68. Consistent. Pierce 40→44. Good.

Then Calvin asked to work summer at restaurant.

Pierce arranged entry-level.

No family title.

Good.

Then Sadie had no business interest.

No need.

Then my estate planning.

Did I create trust? Avoid trust fatigue. But minor inheritance eventually needs structure. No need central. We can say updated will with professional executor/custodian, no details.

Important:

No Gloria as sole household guardian.

No Pierce.

Aria? Sadie.

Guardianship to Natalie’s sister? We haven't introduced. Could avoid.

Then one day Gloria asked:

“Did you remove me from guardianship?”

“You were never named.”

She laughed.

“Good.”

Then:

“I would’ve been terrible.”

Maybe once.

Now?

Still not needed.

Then one business scandal unrelated tried to use family history.

A competitor implied Marchetti Holdings funded personal lifestyle.

Independent audited statements dismissed.

No issue.

Family office separate.

Transparency helped.

Then I realized old scandal no longer threatened company because controls documented.

Good.

Then Gloria’s criminal record eligible for sealing? Misdemeanor maybe eventually.

She asked lawyer.

Could petition.

Did she?

“No.”

Why?

“Not yet.”

No need perform shame.

Then Pierce could petition later after time.

No need.

Then family support policy updated annually.

No big.

Then Sadie began helping cook.

One night she burned chicken.

Kitchen filled smoke.

Gloria happened to be visiting.

Everyone froze.

Sadie looked horrified.

Then Gloria laughed so hard she had to sit.

“Even the dog wouldn’t eat this.”

Silence.

The original line.

I felt my body go cold.

Gloria realized instantly.

“I’m sorry.”

Sadie looked at chicken.

Then at Gloria.

Then laughed.

“Dog can.”

She tried give dog.

We stopped.

Not safe.

Then the tension broke.

The line had lost some poison because Sadie owned moment.

Later I asked Gloria:

“Too much.”

“Yes.”

“Don’t repeat.”

“I won’t.”

No nostalgia over harm.

Good.

Then Sadie said:

“I thought funny.”

“Okay.”

Her experience.

Not mine.

Then Gloria asked:

“Do you remember first steak?”

“Yes.”

“How feel?”

“Bad.”

“Do you remember now?”

“Little.”

Good.

Then:

“Did I scare you?”

“Before.”

“Now?”

“No.”

Gloria cried.

Sadie rolled eyes.

Adults always crying.

Then she hugged.

No demanded forgiveness.

Then that night Gloria said:

“I wanted her to remember me differently.”

“You can’t choose memory.”

“I know.”

“Behavior.”

“Yes.”

Then she left.

No key.

Invited.

The family had finally reached a point where old words could appear without controlling current room.

Still, I kept one promise:

May you like

No one would ever again use Sadie’s needs as a hiding place for adult wants.

The final chapter before epilogue would close the last financial records and let the house move beyond scandal completely.
