Chapter 16 - THE FIRE UNDER MARLOWE HEADQUARTERS

Firefighters contained the annex blaze before it reached the main building.

Three storage rooms suffered heavy damage.

One held duplicate loan files.

Another contained employee pension records.

The third stored historical design documents from my mother.

The timing turned destruction into another attack on Evelyn’s legacy.

Diane denied involvement.

Her driver, Marcus Shaw, said he dropped off a garment bag and left.

Garage footage showed him carrying two fuel containers disguised inside luggage.

He requested counsel.

The fire alarm had been placed in test mode using credentials assigned to Marlowe’s facilities director.

The director claimed Diane ordered a “quiet maintenance window” because Richard’s medical equipment was being installed upstairs.

Richard was not in the building.

Marcus eventually admitted transporting the containers.

He said Diane told him old cleaning chemicals required disposal.

He did not see her ignite anything.

Investigators found a remote timer inside the annex.

The purchase traced to Diane’s assistant.

The assistant cooperated.

Diane had instructed her to acquire equipment through a personal card and destroy invoices.

The evidence supported arson and obstruction charges.

It also revealed desperation.

The cloud archive survived.

The burned paper copies were not the only records.

Diane’s act increased criminal exposure without eliminating proof.

One damaged box contained pension documents showing Richard borrowed against employee funds to support hotel renovations.

The receiver froze family assets and restored the pension accounts through insurance reserves and recovered money.

Employees who had viewed the conflict as wealthy-family warfare began seeing their own losses inside it.

A housekeeper from the Marlowe Grand testified that Richard cut retirement contributions while renovating his private villa.

A banquet manager described forced unpaid overtime for family galas.

The company’s culture mirrored the marriage.

Service flowed upward.

Consequences flowed downward.

I joined the receiver’s advisory meetings only as trust beneficiary and protector.

I did not assume management.

Architectural expertise did not qualify me to repair pension systems or hotel finance.

I asked questions.

Independent professionals answered.

Arthur attended no meetings unless invited as a lender representative.

When he disagreed, he submitted written objections like everyone else.

The restraint cost him.

It made his presence less dangerous.

Diane was arrested after investigators completed the fire evidence.

She appeared in court without pearls.

The judge detained her because of evidence destruction and access to private aircraft.

Richard remained under guarded medical release.

Ethan stayed in custody after violating the no-contact order through Natalie.

He had sent me another message.

Not a threat.

A plea:

Do not let them erase every good thing we had.

I did not answer.

He was asking me to preserve meaning for him.

That was no longer my responsibility.

The burned design room yielded one unexpected object.

A metal tube survived beneath a collapsed shelf.

Inside was an original drawing by my mother and a sealed audio cassette labeled:

FOR CLAIRE — AFTER SHE CHOOSES FOR HERSELF.

May you like

The tape had remained in Marlowe custody for nearly three decades.

Richard had never given it to me.
