Chapter 24 - THE HIP SURGERY

Drusilla hated needing help.

Predictably.

She fired two aides in one week.

I told her:

“If you fire the third, I will help find another. I will not become your full-time caregiver.”

“You’re my son.”

“Yes.”

“That means something.”

“It does.”

“What?”

“I care. I visit. I help with decisions you ask me to help with. It does not mean I move you into my house.”

She stared.

Then laughed weakly.

“You’ve rehearsed that.”

“For fifteen years.”

Fair.

Ysella visited once.

Brought flowers.

Drusilla asked:

“Can you hand me water?”

Ysella did.

No hierarchy.

Need.

Help.

Ordinary.

Then Drusilla apologized for one specific thing I had never heard her name.

“I used your grief.”

I looked at her.

“Elowen died and you were drowning. I made myself necessary.”

“That’s true.”

“I thought necessity was the same as love.”

“No.”

“I know.”

That was enough.

Hip healed.

Aides left.

Drusilla returned to independence.

Good.

No permanent role reversal.

Then I visited Briar Crown for the first time under Stonebridge.

Work reason.

Lobby looked different.

The hotel survived.

I sent Drusilla a photo.

She replied:

They ruined the lamps.

I laughed.

Some identity remained.

She could miss the hotel without owning it.

I could remember Wren House without living there.

Ysella could know the old bedroom without needing it back.

That was the pattern.

Possession had stopped being the only proof.

Then Stonebridge named the renovated garden wing after the original architect, not Drusilla.

She complained.

Then let it go.

Small miracles.

At the end of Chapter 24, Naomi emailed:

Final closure confirmation.

Palisade file archived.

Probation complete.

Civil settlement satisfied.

No outstanding property claims.

No pending restitution.

Every legal piece finished.

I printed nothing.

Archived electronically.

There would be no mysterious paper in Chapter 27.

May you like

No last envelope.

The story no longer needed evidence.
