Chapter 21 - TRAVIS TELLS THE STORY

Luca was twelve when he asked Travis to tell him everything without me there.

I did not like it.

That was partly why it needed to happen.

Luca had his own therapist available and knew he could leave.

The meeting occurred at Travis’s home.

Daytime.

No court supervisor anymore; years of safe contact had earned limited ordinary parenting time.

I waited elsewhere.

Later Luca told me the important parts.

He asked:

“Did Mom agree to help your company?”

Travis said:

“She said she wanted to help. She did not agree to the exact deal I filed.”

Good.

“Why file?”

“I was afraid she would say no once you were born.”

“Why?”

“Because the trust rules changed and because she might decide my company was not worth the risk.”

“Was it?”

“No.”

That surprised Luca.

“You know now?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Did Grandma make you?”

“No.”

Important.

“We encouraged each other.”

Good.

“Who changed bracelet?”

“I did.”

No hiding behind Darlene.

“Why?”

“To scare your mom and delay the hospital proving the band was wrong.”

“Were you going to take me?”

“No.”

“Then why say she keep son?”

“Because we wanted her to believe signing was the fastest way to stop being afraid.”

Luca went quiet.

Then:

“Did you love Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Travis answered:

“I treated love like proof that she would eventually forgive what I did for our future.”

There.

The clearest thing he had learned.

Then Luca asked:

“Do you want her back?”

“No.”

I had not expected relief.

Then:

“She built a good life without me. My job is not to reopen it.”

Good.

Then Luca asked about prison.

Travis explained.

No victim blame.

Then Cole Meridian.

“Do you regret losing company?”

“Yes.”

“More than Mom?”

“No.”

“More than me?”

“No.”

“Then dumb.”

“Yes.”

When Luca came home, he was quiet.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah.”

“Want to talk?”

“No.”

I respected.

Two days later:

“He told it ugly.”

Exactly what I hoped.

Then Darlene.

Luca asked her version separately months later.

She also told it ugly.

No coordination.

No family script.

Their accounts differed in some details.

Who first suggested the bracelet?

Darlene said Travis.

Travis said Darlene.

Evidence showed joint planning but not first idea.

Luca asked me which was true.

“I don’t know.”

He stared.

“You always know.”

“No.”

Important.

Some facts remain uncertain.

Truth does not require filling every gap.

Then Luca asked:

“Does it matter?”

“Not much now.”

He nodded.

Then he told Darlene:

“I’m not calling you Grandma every time.”

She said:

“Okay.”

He sometimes called her Darlene.

Sometimes Grandma.

His choice.

Then my father learned and looked offended on her behalf.

I said:

“Not your relationship.”

He stopped.

Good.

Then Luca asked to change his surname.

He had been Luca Cole legally.

He wanted Luca Santori Cole.

Why?

“Both.”

No rejection.

No loyalty test.

Travis consented.

I consented.

Court approved.

Darlene cried privately.

Marco celebrated too loudly.

Luca rolled his eyes.

Then at school, one form asked preferred name.

He wrote:

May you like

Luca.

Exactly.
