Chapter 9 - THE PRESCRIPTION HE CARRIED

Daniel recognized the prescription immediately.

“Vivian asked me to collect it.”

“Why?”

“She said it was medication for your nausea.”

“You did not read the label?”

“The pharmacy bag was sealed.”

The pickup receipt showed the drug name.

Daniel had signed beneath it.

He admitted he did not examine the paperwork.

Again, a signature placed where someone told him.

The medication was not found in my blood, meaning the plan had not reached that stage.

Investigators believed Vivian intended to administer it before burial to reduce evidence if I survived longer than expected.

Daniel’s careless pickup made him part of the chain without making him part of the conspiracy.

The prosecutor did not charge him.

Our marriage still had to live with the fact.

“I trusted your mother because she sounded certain,” he said in therapy.

“You trusted authority over curiosity.”

“Yes.”

“You signed a pickup receipt.”

“Yes.”

“You brought the medication into our house.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to it?”

“I gave the bag to Marcus’s driver.”

Phone location and camera footage supported his account.

The driver admitted delivering it to Vivian.

He had no knowledge of the contents.

The incident deepened Daniel’s guilt but not his criminal exposure.

He began reading every document related to Clara’s care aloud before signing.

At first, the habit irritated me.

Then I understood he was retraining himself.

Trust did not mean surrendering attention.

The criminal cases separated into three tracks.

Genevieve had no role in the coffin conspiracy and remained a witness only to later financial documents.

Vivian and Marcus faced charges related to my attempted murder, Clara’s attempted killing, kidnapping Claire, financial fraud, and Charles’s death.

Crowe and Kendra pleaded guilty and awaited sentencing.

Howard Pike, the funeral director, lost his license permanently and received custodial and probationary penalties for his role.

The hospital pharmacist who ignored the badge discrepancy entered a regulatory agreement but faced no criminal charge because evidence showed negligence rather than conspiracy.

The Vale board approved a restructuring plan.

The illegal research division closed.

A compensation fund received two hundred million dollars from asset sales, insurers, and clawed-back executive payments.

Independent medical monitors contacted overseas trial participants.

Some had been harmed.

Several had died from complications concealed in company reports.

I met their representatives by video.

One woman from Argentina said:

“Your family did not discover us when you became victims. We were already here.”

She was right.

My coffin was not the beginning of the Vale crimes.

It was the moment privilege finally turned inward.

I accepted the protector role only under strict conditions.

An independent trustee controlled Clara’s shares.

I could remove directors for cause through reviewed procedures but could not transfer assets to myself.

When Clara became an adult, she would choose whether to retain, sell, or place the shares in long-term trust.

No inheritance should become a command.

Marcus’s attorney sought to exclude his laboratory confession.

The judge ruled Daniel’s recorded conversation admissible because Marcus voluntarily spoke during a lawful rescue operation and no government agent coerced the statements.

Vivian’s attorneys attacked the funeral checklist.

Handwriting analysis confirmed it was hers.

Then they produced evidence that Marcus had altered one line after her arrest.

If movement occurs, Marcus handles Daniel.

The original wording was:

If movement occurs, Crowe handles medication.

Marcus had changed the line to make Vivian appear more violent.

The forgery did not make her innocent.

It exposed his willingness to manufacture evidence even against his partner.

The prosecution had to rebuild the chain carefully.

Then Claire found a voicemail Vivian left for Crowe during the funeral.

“Elena moved once in refrigeration. Marcus gave the second dose. If she moves again in public, do not let Daniel reach her.”

Vivian had known I was alive before the coffin opened.
