Chapter 6 - AUNT VANESSA’S PARTY
Vanessa Reed was Claire’s older sister.
She hosted elaborate parties for reasons ordinary people solved with dinner.
That night’s event supposedly celebrated her husband’s promotion.
Photographs showed a rented rooftop ballroom, champagne towers, a live band, and nearly eighty guests.
Vanessa initially claimed Claire arrived at 5:30 and remained until after midnight.
Phone-location data contradicted her.
Claire left the party shortly before six.
Returned at 6:42.
Marcus arrived separately.
Diane reached the venue at 4:38 and remained until 8:30, when she drove to our house.
She returned with the Northstar envelope hidden beneath her coat.
Vanessa’s first police interview contained careful language.
“Was Claire having an affair?” the investigator asked.
“I never saw sexual conduct.”
“Did Marcus attend?”
“Yes.”
“Did he and Claire leave together?”
“I was hosting.”
“Did Claire ask you to cover for her absence?”
“She said Daniel might call and asked me to say she was in the restroom.”
“Why?”
“She did not want an argument.”
“About Marcus?”
“About everything.”
Vanessa insisted she knew nothing about the children being alone.
Party footage later showed Diane speaking to her at 5:27.
The audio captured only part of the conversation.
Vanessa asked:
“Who is with the baby?”
Diane answered:
“Lily.”
Vanessa laughed.
“At least someone in that house is responsible.”
She had known.
At 9:36, Claire’s phone rang.
The display showed HOME.
Vanessa stood beside her.
A guest’s video captured the exchange accidentally while filming the band.
Claire answered.
Her expression changed.
“Stop crying.”
Pause.
“Clean it up.”
Pause.
“No, do not call your father.”
Vanessa reached toward the phone.
“Tell her to put the baby down.”
Claire shook her head.
“She says he screams.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“Turn that off.”
Claire ended the call.
Then Vanessa handed her another drink.
When confronted with the footage, Vanessa changed her statement.
She said she believed Diane would return immediately.
She said Lily had often watched Noah for short periods.
She said Claire exaggerated problems to maintain control because Daniel worked too much.
Every explanation contained fragments of family history.
None changed the hours.
Vanessa agreed to speak with me only after her attorney advised cooperation.
We met inside a conference room.
“You think I hate you,” she began.
“I think you helped conceal what happened.”
“I didn’t know Lily was injured.”
“You knew she was alone.”
“I thought Mom was nearby.”
“You watched Claire tell her not to call me.”
Vanessa looked toward her lawyer.
Then back at me.
“Claire said you were about to be arrested.”
“For what?”
“Leaking state evidence to Marcus.”
“Marcus was using my token.”
“I know that now.”
“What did you know then?”
She twisted a tissue between her fingers.
“Claire said you had been moving money secretly and planning to leave her with nothing.”
“Did she show you proof?”
“Emails.”
“From my account?”
“Yes.”
They were forged.
The messages described me hiding assets, meeting another woman, and planning to use government contacts to gain custody.
Marcus had shown Claire similar material.
He had built a version of me that made betrayal feel defensive.
That did not erase what Claire chose.
It explained the story she used to permit it.
“Did Marcus tell you to host the party?” I asked.
Vanessa’s eyes lifted.
“He suggested Claire needed an alibi.”
“For the financial transfers?”
“I thought for the affair.”
“Did you receive eighteen thousand dollars from our accounts?”
“My company organized events for Claire.”
“What events?”
Vanessa could not name services matching the payments.
Her lawyer ended the interview.
Before leaving, she placed her phone on the table.
“There is a deleted conversation,” she said.
“With whom?”
“Marcus.”
The recovered messages showed him instructing Vanessa to keep Claire at the party after ten.
VANESSA: THE CHILDREN ARE ALONE.
MARCUS: THAT HELPS.
VANESSA: HOW?
MARCUS: WHEN DANIEL COMES HOME, CLAIRE SAYS HE ABANDONED THEM FOR WORK. CHAOS MAKES FINANCIAL RECORDS LOOK LIKE A MARRIAGE DISPUTE.
VANESSA: YOU SAID HE WOULD NOT RETURN UNTIL TOMORROW.
MARCUS: HE WON’T UNLESS SOMEONE CALLS HIM.
VANESSA: LILY HAS HIS NUMBER.
MARCUS: THEN MAKE SURE CLAIRE KEEPS HER QUIET.
My children had not been an inconvenience to the plan.
Their neglect was useful.
If I returned after the accounts emptied, Claire could accuse me of abandoning the family while she created a financial escape.
If I discovered the affair, the argument would make every suspicious transfer appear connected to divorce rather than fraud.
Marcus had treated our family’s pain as camouflage.
Then Vanessa showed me the final message.
MARCUS: CROSS CONFIRMED DANIEL’S TOKEN WILL OPEN THE INDEX UNTIL MIDNIGHT.
Vanessa asked:
May you like
WHO IS CROSS?
Marcus never answered.
