Chapter 4 - THE STORY ROBERT GAVE THE BOARD
Robert released an internal statement claiming Jonathan had voluntarily surrendered his shares to protect the company from my “financial instability.”
The message reached every employee before noon.
It described me as a grieving widow who had become obsessed with obtaining control through Ethan.
Jonathan had been dead for eighteen months.
Until that morning, Robert had always said the shares reverted automatically under a company agreement.
His story had changed because someone knew the original folder existed.
I requested the corporate buy-sell agreement.
Company counsel sent a version dated three months before Jonathan’s death.
It required a deceased shareholder’s interest to return to the company for a fixed payment.
No payment had ever reached Jonathan’s estate.
Robert said the amount offset debts Jonathan owed.
Rachel found no debt schedule attached.
A signature page was missing between sections nine and eleven.
Page ten.
The missing page Robert mentioned at the dinner.
Before we could subpoena the original, Claire filed a police report accusing me of removing company property during the banquet.
She claimed the event-office records contained confidential trust information.
Hotel cameras showed me photographing one billing order, not taking files.
The accusation still delayed my access to the company.
Ethan’s school called.
Claire had arrived with a notarized family authorization and attempted to collect him.
The office refused because she was not on my approved list.
I reached the school as Claire returned to her car.
“Stay away from my son.”
“He is Robert’s grandson.”
“Yesterday he was beneath your dog.”
Her face hardened.
“You have no idea what Jonathan asked us to protect him from.”
“Show me.”
“You will see it in court.”
She drove away.
The school gave me a copy of her authorization.
My signature had been copied from Ethan’s enrollment form.
A notary named Calvin Ross had certified it.
The same notary had witnessed Jonathan’s supposed share surrender.
Rachel requested his journal.
Calvin reported that it had been destroyed in a flooded storage room.
That evening, Ethan asked why Aunt Claire wanted to take him.
“She was not allowed to.”
“Because she isn’t family?”
I crouched beside him.
“Adults are arguing about papers. None of those papers decide whether you are loved.”
“Grandpa decides.”
“No.”
He studied me.
“Then why did everybody laugh?”
I had no answer that would not place adult cruelty inside him.
Before bed, he removed something from his hoodie pocket.
A brass key.
“I found it under Grandpa’s chair after he threw the food.”
