Chapter 5 - THE MAN FROM THE CRASH
The unidentified relative was not a secret father.
He was David’s younger half brother.
A man no one had told me existed.
His name was Jonathan Vale.
He was thirty-nine, worked as an aircraft mechanic, and had submitted DNA after investigators recovered remains from the Whitmore Crown plane crash.
Jonathan was not aboard.
He provided a family reference sample because one victim could not initially be identified.
The official file described him as David Whitmore’s maternal half sibling.
David and Claire shared Robert as their father.
Jonathan shared David’s mother, Elizabeth Vale.
Robert had married Elizabeth before he married Claire’s mother.
The marriage lasted three years.
Jonathan was born after their divorce and raised under another surname.
David knew him.
The black ledger confirmed it.
J.V. CHECKED STARBOARD HYDRAULICS.
J.V. SAYS PART WAS NEVER REPLACED.
FATHER ORDERED HIM OFF PROPERTY.
I found Jonathan through Maya.
He agreed to meet at a private office.
He carried a canvas bag filled with maintenance photographs.
“I wondered when David’s wife would find me,” he said.
“Why didn’t you contact me after the crash?”
“I tried.”
He showed me three returned letters addressed to our old apartment.
Robert’s office had marked them undeliverable.
Jonathan also emailed Samuel Price.
No answer.
“What did you know?”
“The plane had a hydraulic pressure problem eight weeks before the crash. I inspected it as a contractor.”
Whitmore Crown leased the aircraft through a related company controlled by Robert.
Jonathan recommended immediate replacement of a pump and inspection of the backup system.
The maintenance director approved the work.
Robert canceled it.
“Why?”
“The aircraft company was being sold. A major repair would reduce the sale price and delay certification.”
“Did David know?”
“I told him.”
David grounded the plane.
Robert reversed the order while David was in Chicago.
On the morning of the crash, David learned the aircraft had been returned to service. He intended to fly commercial, but Robert’s assistant told him the company plane was already fueled and the board expected him in Denver.
Weather deteriorated during flight.
The hydraulic system failed during approach.
The crew could not fully control the landing configuration.
Investigators cited mechanical failure but accepted maintenance records stating the pump had been replaced.
Jonathan placed an invoice on the table.
The part number existed.
The installation did not.
The mechanic listed on the form had died six months before the supposed repair.
“Who created the invoice?” I asked.
“Claire’s event and services company submitted it through a maintenance broker.”
Claire’s company had not only billed parties.
It processed related-party expenses Robert wanted hidden from the board.
“Did Claire know David was on the plane?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“She called me before takeoff.”
“What did she say?”
“She asked whether the defect would make the aircraft crash.”
My hands went cold.
“What did you answer?”
“I said mechanical failures are unpredictable and the plane must remain grounded.”
“What did she do?”
“She said Father had already made the decision.”
“Did you report the call?”
“Yes. To the company attorney.”
“Samuel Price?”
“Yes.”
The same man who resigned from Ethan’s trust before Robert’s guardianship filing.
Jonathan opened his canvas bag and removed a small digital recorder.
“David gave me this a week before he died.”
“What is on it?”
“A conversation with Robert.”
“Why didn’t you take it to police?”
“I did. The county investigator said aircraft matters belonged to federal authorities. Federal investigators said the recording’s chain of custody was unclear and focused on the maintenance documents.”
“Why keep it?”
“Because David asked me to.”
The audio began with Robert’s voice.
The company aircraft stays in service.
David answered:
If that pump fails, someone could die.
Robert said:
Then don’t be someone who gets on it.
The recording stopped.
Jonathan looked at me.
“David boarded because Robert’s office told him Ethan had been injured and he needed to return immediately after Denver.”

Someone had used my son to place David on the plane.
