Chapter 4 - THE CHILDREN HE USED AS A REASON

Greg came to Claire’s house that evening.

He did not enter.

Claire’s doorbell camera recorded everything.

“Can we talk?”

I stepped onto the porch alone.

Rachel had told me I was allowed to speak to my husband.

Just not to hand him the necklace or sign anything.

“Why did you call the appraiser?”

His face tightened.

“I was worried.”

“How did you know which appraiser?”

Silence.

“Greg.”

“I checked your location.”

“What?”

“We share family location.”

I had forgotten.

He used Find My.

I turned it off immediately.

His expression became wounded.

“Laura, please stop acting like I’m stalking you.”

“You followed my location and called a business I visited.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

He looked at the camera.

“Can we not do this on your sister’s porch?”

“No.”

“Emma and Noah need stability.”

“Don’t use the children to change the subject.”

“I’m not.”

“You haven’t asked how they slept.”

He stopped.

I saw the shame.

Then anger came to protect it.

“You took them.”

“After your sister assaulted me while you watched.”

“You retaliated.”

“Yes. And I’ve said that.”

“You think that makes it better?”

“No. Do you think saying Chloe was stressed makes hers better?”

He rubbed the back of his neck.

“I need you to give Dad the necklace temporarily.”

“No.”

“He can authenticate it.”

“No.”

“It might not even be Evelyn’s to give.”

“Then he can make that argument through a lawyer.”

His eyes hardened.

“So Rachel Sloan is involved now.”

“How do you know her name?”

Another pause.

“I guessed you’d hire someone.”

“Her name.”

“Dad’s lawyer heard.”

There it was.

Information moved through the Bennett family faster than truth.

“What did your father tell you about the necklace?”

“That it belonged to Eleanor Blackwell.”

“Who was she?”

“A client.”

“Why would Grandma have it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why did she warn me never to let a Bennett appraise it?”

Greg stared at me.

“Did she really say that?”

“Yes.”

Something changed in him.

Fear again.

“What else did she tell you?”

“Why?”

“What else?”

“Greg.”

He lowered his voice.

“You cannot understand what that necklace could trigger.”

“Then explain.”

“I can’t.”

“Won’t.”

“Can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Dad made us promise.”

I almost laughed.

“You’re thirty-eight.”

“That doesn’t mean promises stop mattering.”

“What promise?”

Greg stepped closer.

Claire opened the front door behind me.

He stopped.

“Family confidentiality.”

“About Eleanor Blackwell?”

His face answered.

“Was she family?”

“No.”

Too quick.

Lie.

“What did your father do?”

Greg looked toward the street.

“I came because I want our kids home.”

“Do you want me home?”

He looked back.

“Yes.”

It took too long.

I had spent years pretending late answers were still answers.

Not anymore.

“I’ll arrange parenting time through counsel until things settle.”

His face changed.

“You’re keeping my children from me?”

“No. I’m not sending them back into a house where Chloe thinks hitting their mother is acceptable and everyone calls silence peace.”

“She won’t be there.”

“Then we can discuss structured time.”

“You’re using them against me.”

“No, Greg. For once, I’m refusing to let you use them against me.”

He left angry.

That night, Emma crawled into my bed.

“Is Daddy coming?”

“Tomorrow afternoon.”

“Are you coming?”

“I’ll be nearby.”

She twisted the blanket.

“Aunt Chloe said you don’t belong.”

“I heard.”

“Do we belong?”

My heart broke.

“You belong wherever you are safe and loved.”

“Does Daddy love us?”

“Yes.”

That answer came quickly.

Love was not yet the question.

Safety was becoming one.
