Chapter 1 - THE CHILD ON THE MARBLE

Chloe slapped Lily before I could cross the last six feet between us.

The sound cracked through the entrance hall of the Grand Imperial Gala. Lily’s jeweled headband flew from her hair. Her small body twisted, and the side of her head struck the polished marble with a dull impact that stopped my heart.

“You little monster!” Chloe shrieked. “Look what you did to my dress!”

A thin line of red punch stained the lower edge of her silver gown.

Lily lay frozen.

Then blood appeared at the corner of her mouth.

I dropped beside her, pressed a folded napkin against her lip, and checked her eyes.

“Look at me, sweetheart.”

Her pupils followed me. Her breathing came in frightened little gasps.

“Mommy…”

“I’m here.”

I pulled her behind my body and looked at Julian.

My husband stood beside the ballroom entrance in a tailored suit, calmly adjusting his tie.

He had watched Chloe strike our daughter.

He did not move toward Lily.

He laughed.

“Trash doesn’t need to be protected.”

The words stripped away the last excuse I had ever made for him.

For six years, I had told myself his indifference was stress. His control of the accounts was responsibility. His refusal to challenge Eleanor was family loyalty. Chloe’s constant presence was merely professional.

Lily’s blood proved what silence had purchased.

I rose slowly.

The divorce papers were already inside my clutch. Julian had arranged for them to be delivered before the gala and expected me to sign in a private room after Eleanor’s announcement.

I removed them.

The custody clause gave Julian sole authority over Lily’s residence, school, medical care, and trust interests. It allowed me supervised contact only if approved by a Sterling family counselor.

I drew a line through every word.

Then I signed beneath my correction.

Julian snatched the pages from my hand.

“Sign and leave—but Lily stays.”

“No.”

“Chloe needs her to carry the train during the presentation.”

Lily pressed her face against the back of my gown.

Julian pointed toward the exit.

“You came into this family with nothing. You will leave with nothing.”

The ballroom doors opened behind him.

Conversation died in waves.

Arthur Vance entered wearing a black tuxedo and carrying a silver-handled walking stick. Men in dark suits followed, but he moved ahead of them alone.

Lily saw him.

“Grandpa!”

She broke from behind me and ran into his arms.

Arthur lowered himself despite the pain in his knee and caught her. When he saw the swelling near her temple and the blood on her lip, something terrible settled behind his eyes.

“Who touched my granddaughter?”

No one answered.

Eleanor stepped from the ballroom in pearls and lace. The moment she saw Arthur, her face lost color.

Chloe’s hand dropped from her stained dress.

Julian stared at me.

“You said your father was dead.”

“I said he was no longer part of my life.”

I opened my palm.

The faded red bracelet lay broken across it. Beneath it rested the black phone I had removed from the hidden compartment in my dressing room that afternoon.

Its recording light was still active.

I placed both objects in Arthur’s hand.

“Dad…”

My voice almost broke.

Arthur rose with Lily held against his chest and gave the phone to the woman beside him.

“Preserve every second.”

Julian stepped forward.

“You cannot bring private security into my gala.”

Arthur looked toward the stage, where a giant Sterling crest hung above a covered presentation table.

“This gala stopped being yours before my daughter reached the door.”

I did not yet know exactly what he meant.

Julian did.

His eyes went to the black phone.

Then to my crossed-out custody clause.

May you like

And finally to the sealed case waiting on the gala stage.

For the first time in six years, my husband looked afraid of me.
