CHAP 4 — Vivian’s Perfect Signature

Maxwell did not sleep that night.

By dawn, Callahan Global’s legal department had every archived file connected to his divorce pulled from storage.

By seven, his private investigator had requested security logs from the Back Bay mansion gate.

By nine, Maxwell was standing in his mother’s Beacon Hill townhouse with Eleanor’s folder in his hand.

Vivian Callahan was having tea.

She wore cream cashmere, diamond studs, and the composed face of a woman who believed panic was something servants did.

“Maxwell,” she said. “You look dreadful.”

He placed the non-paternity waiver on the table.

“Did you forge my signature?”

Her teacup paused.

Only for half a second.

That was enough.

“I did what you were too sentimental to do.”

His voice dropped.

“You knew Eleanor was pregnant.”

Vivian set the cup down.

“Of course I knew.”

The room went silent except for the rain tapping the windows.

Maxwell felt a cold, unfamiliar rage settle inside him.

“You kept my daughter from me.”

“I protected you from a woman who wanted to chain herself to your fortune through a child.”

“Sophie was sick in a CVS last night because her mother couldn’t afford antibiotics.”

Vivian’s mouth tightened.

“That is unfortunate.”

Unfortunate.

Not monstrous.

Not unforgivable.

Unfortunate.

Maxwell looked at his mother and finally saw her clearly.

For years, he had mistaken control for protection because control wore pearls and spoke softly at his dining table.

“What else did you do?”

Vivian lifted her chin.

“Eleanor was never suited to us.”

“To us?”

“She was emotional. Proud. Middle-class women always call dignity what is really resentment.”

Maxwell leaned closer.

“You had security turn away my pregnant wife.”

“Ex-wife.”

“She was pregnant with my child.”

“She had already left.”

“After you threatened her.”

Vivian’s eyes sharpened.

“You should be grateful. I preserved the Callahan name.”

Maxwell laughed once.

It sounded nothing like humor.

“You used my name to abandon my child.”

His attorney, David Mercer, entered then with two compliance officers behind him. Vivian’s face changed for the first time.

“Maxwell, what is this?”

David opened his tablet.

“Mrs. Callahan, the family office has been placed under emergency audit. Your trustee access is suspended pending investigation into forged documents, misappropriated communications, and unauthorized legal instructions issued in Mr. Callahan’s name.”

Vivian stood.

“You cannot suspend me from my own family.”

Maxwell looked at the forged waiver.

“It stopped being yours when you used it against my daughter.”

Her voice trembled with rage.

“You would choose that woman over your mother?”

Maxwell answered without hesitation.

“I choose the child you erased.”

By noon, the first truth surfaced.

Vivian had paid the divorce attorney to route all communications through her office.

By three, the mansion gate logs confirmed Eleanor had come twice while pregnant.

By evening, a former assistant sent Maxwell the email that finished everything.

Mrs. Bennett Callahan was here again. She was crying. She said Mr. Callahan needs to know about the baby.

Vivian’s reply was one sentence.

He knows enough. Send her away.
