Chapter 1 - THE CEDAR KENNEL

Carter’s fingers closed around my upper arm so hard that pain traveled into my shoulder.

I was eight months pregnant, barefoot now because one heel had broken somewhere between the master bedroom and the back staircase, and I could barely keep my balance as he dragged me across the marble.

“Carter, stop.”

He laughed.

Not nervously.

Not drunkenly.

He laughed as though humiliation were finally giving him relief.

Behind us, Vanessa Cole leaned against the bedroom doorway wearing my champagne-colored silk robe.

My robe.

My grandmother had given it to me the morning of my wedding.

Vanessa had tied it carelessly at the waist. My diamond-drop earrings glittered beneath her hair.

One of my Waterford wineglasses rested in her hand.

Carter opened the back door.

Winter air struck my face.

Beyond him, the Whitmore estate stretched beneath Connecticut moonlight—heated pool, stone fountain, trimmed boxwood, guesthouse, and the cedar kennel built beside the rose garden for Duke and Duchess, Carter’s two golden retrievers.

The dogs were inside with the housekeeper.

The kennel was empty.

Carter pulled me toward it anyway.

My daughter moved sharply beneath my ribs.

I wrapped both hands over my belly.

“Tonight,” Carter said, “you sleep where loyalty belongs.”

He yanked open the little cedar door and shoved me.

My knee hit the wooden threshold.

I fell onto one hip, twisting so my abdomen never struck the floor.

Pain shot through my back.

I sucked air through my teeth and waited for the baby to move.

One second.

Two.

Then a firm kick pressed beneath my palm.

Alive.

Carter threw a folded cashmere blanket after me.

It landed partly across my legs.

Vanessa lifted her glass.

“Don’t worry, Maddie. The dogs never complained.”

I looked at her.

Foundation smeared the cuff of my robe.

Her red polish was chipped.

Behind her, one drawer of my bedside table stood open.

She had not merely slept in my bed.

She had searched it.

I picked up the blanket slowly.

Something metallic slipped from the folds.

A silver cufflink bounced twice against the stone patio.

Carter stopped breathing.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

I reached down.

Three engraved initials caught the lantern light.

B.W.H.

I knew those initials.

Bennett William Hale.

Fifty-three.

Chief financial officer of Whitmore Capital.

The man who signed every audited financial statement Carter showed investors.

I did not say his name.

Not yet.

I held the cufflink between two fingers and looked from Vanessa to my husband.

“Carter… are you afraid of this man?”

His face changed.

He stepped toward me.

“Give me that.”

I moved backward beside the kennel.

His voice rose.

“Give me that and get inside.”

I looked toward the porch lantern.

Inside the decorative brass housing sat a black lens no larger than a shirt button.

Six months earlier, after bank statements began disappearing and security clips were suddenly “corrupted,” I had paid for an independent backup system.

Carter knew about the visible cameras.

He did not know about this one.

The light blinked.

Recording.

Carter followed my gaze.

Vanessa went pale.

He lunged for the cufflink.

I closed my fist.

“Madison.”

He used the tone that had once ended arguments.

My body shook.

I stayed still.

“You should think very carefully about what you do next,” he said.

“I already am.”

Vanessa crossed the patio.

“Carter, the camera.”

“I see it.”

“You said you removed all of them.”

“All the company cameras.”

The word company mattered.

Not house.

Not security.

Company.

A faint vibration touched my wrist.

My watch.

The hidden system had detected motion and completed an automatic remote upload.

One clip preserved.

Carter reached toward the lantern.

I said:

“Too late.”

He stared at me.

For the first time since I had discovered Vanessa in my bedroom, the contempt disappeared.

Fear replaced it.

Then Bennett Hale’s voice came through the half-open patio door behind Vanessa.

“Carter? Did she sign?”

May you like

My husband closed his eyes.

The cufflink in my palm suddenly felt much heavier.
