Chapter 23 - THE DEBT IS FINALLY CLOSED

Seven years after Hearthstone began? Wait current timeline ~5 years? Bodie 10 from 5, yes 5 years. Stellan’s settlement plan ended.

He paid final personal-guarantee installment.

No bankruptcy.

No hidden debt.

No cabin.

Meridian Ridge sent satisfaction letter.

He forwarded me a copy.

Subject:

Done.

I replied:

Good.

Then he wrote:

I want you to know I never listed anything of yours again.

I stared.

Not needed.

Still meaningful.

Then:

I know I don’t get credit for normal.

Correct.

I wrote nothing else.

Snowline itself survived under Everett and another partner.

Hearthstone Market eventually stabilized under new ownership after lender sale.

Some investors lost money.

Some recovered.

No miraculous success vindicating Stellan.

His judgment was bad.

Consequences real.

He now worked as project director for a regional builder.

Salary lower than peak.

Stable.

No personal guarantees.

Nora insisted too.

Good.

Then my own work.

I became managing partner at my commercial property advisory firm.

No billionaire transformation.

Comfortable.

Independent.

I had purchased cabin once because I could, not because I was secretly wealthy beyond belief.

The investment appreciated.

Still one asset.

Then I met someone.

Elias Ward.

Thirty-nine.

Widowed.

Civil engineer.

No children.

First date:

Coffee.

Fourth:

Dinner.

Eight months before Bodie met him.

I had learned patience.

Bodie interrogated:

“Do you ski?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“Do you like cabin?”

“I haven’t seen it.”

Bodie looked at me.

“Why?”

“Because Mom owns it.”

I nearly laughed.

Correct.

Elias did not assume access.

Later he came as guest.

No key.

No opinions.

Excellent.

Then Gretchen’s relationship with me remained distant.

We spoke at Bodie events.

Polite.

One day she said:

“You look happy.”

“I am.”

“With him?”

“Also.”

She nodded.

No jealousy.

Then:

“I’m sorry I made your ownership of the cabin feel like an attack.”

I looked at her.

“You made Bodie an attack.”

Her face fell.

“Yes.”

She still needed the concrete reminder.

Then Leland died.

Seventy-four.

Stroke complications.

Bodie fifteen? Wait timeline too jumpy. We don't want huge time jump. Current Bodie 10. Let's not kill yet. Keep active within 2 more years perhaps. Leland could have another health issue but not death.

Instead Leland needed assisted living after fall.

Bodie visited.

Gretchen visited separately.

Leland worried about becoming dependent.

He told me:

“I keep thinking if I had opened the door that day, maybe marriage survives.”

“Maybe.”

“Do you think?”

“I think counterfactuals are addictive.”

He smiled.

Then:

“I’m proud of Stellan.”

“For?”

“Being a better father.”

“Good.”

“And you.”

“For?”

“Not selling the house just to prove you could.”

That surprised me.

I had almost.

He continued:

“Power feels best when you don’t need to use it.”

Maybe.

Then Bodie entered with vending-machine chips.

“Grandpa!”

Conversation ended.

Good.

Then Gretchen’s probation officially ended.

No restrictions.

Legally free to contact as anyone else.

But our family boundaries remained by agreement.

That transition mattered.

No court forcing.

Would she respect rules without probation officer?

First test:

She asked Bodie directly whether he wanted weekend at her apartment.

He said:

“Ask Mom and Dad.”

Good.

She did.

We said no overnight yet.

She accepted.

No argument.

A year later, after consistent contact, we allowed one daytime visit alone.

No issue.

Then eventually one overnight? Maybe too much. We can leave future open but final no major unresolved. Could allow once Bodie 12 if he wants.

But before that, a food issue surfaced.

Gretchen baked cookies.

Bodie ate four.

She said:

“That’s enough.”

He froze.

She saw.

Then corrected:

“Not because you’re bad. Because four is a lot and dinner is soon.”

He asked:

“Can I have one after?”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

Normal limit.

That was perhaps harder than unlimited indulgence.

She was learning to parent less like warden and less like guilty servant.

May you like

But she would never again be his authority without parents’ permission.

That was final.
