Chapter 5 - NOAH REED REFUSED TO DISAPPEAR
Noah came to see me three days after the party.
He wore the same black service trousers but no uniform jacket.
A fading red mark crossed his wrist.
“I’m Emma’s brother,” he said.
That explained why the young server had stepped forward.
“Did she send you to meet me?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
The answer changed the room.
Emma had stopped responding the night before the party.
Noah believed she was hiding because someone followed her after she copied the audit files.
“Why didn’t you tell police sooner?”
“She asked me not to.”
“Why?”
“She said she needed time to identify who inside Carter Meridian was changing the records.”
“You were supposed to give me something?”
He nodded.
“A memory card.”
“Do you have it?”
“No.”
Noah described arriving at Belle Meade at noon with the card taped beneath his belt.
At 2:45, Patricia Mitchell called him into the pantry.
She knew his name.
She asked whether his sister still worked for Carter Meridian.
When he denied knowing anything about Emma, George entered.
“He told me people who steal company records go to prison.”
“Did he threaten you?”
“Not directly.”
“What happened to the card?”
“I moved it.”
“Where?”
“Inside the lining of the grocery bag left near the south gate.”
I looked toward Helen Cross.
The bag had been in police custody.
No card appeared during the initial inventory.
We contacted Detective Ortiz.
The evidence log showed the bag entered a sealed container at 6:14 p.m.
At 6:27, an officer noticed the seam was torn.
The grocery bag had been handled by guests, Patricia, me, Ethan, and police before sealing.
Anyone could have removed the card.
Noah continued:
“When you came through the gate, I recognized the bag. I tried to reach you.”
“Vanessa stopped you.”
“She knew I was Emma’s brother.”
“Did she know about the card?”
“I don’t know.”
“What happened after police arrived?”
“Patricia cornered me near the kitchen and said my family would regret lying.”
The mark on his wrist came from George grabbing him during that confrontation.
Security footage confirmed contact.
George claimed he was preventing Noah from stealing champagne.
No champagne appeared in Noah’s hands.
The footage showed George leaning close and saying something the camera could not hear.
Noah filed a formal statement.
He also gave investigators access to messages Emma sent before disappearing.
EMMA: The invoice fraud is real, but it is not the largest problem.
NOAH: What is?
EMMA: Guest deposits are being moved through a Carter account before they reach Mitchell.
NOAH: Is Ethan involved?
EMMA: I don’t think so.
NOAH: Who is?
EMMA: Someone using J.P. approvals.
NOAH: Julian Price?
EMMA: Maybe. The account is too perfect.
Her final message arrived at 11:42 the night before the party.
If I miss our Sunday call, give the card to Margaret. Do not trust anyone who already knows what bag you’re carrying.
Noah had not told Vanessa about the bag.
Emma had.
Or someone monitoring Emma’s messages had.
Detective Ortiz opened a missing-person inquiry.
Emma’s apartment showed no sign of violence.
Her laptop was gone.
A packed suitcase remained beneath the bed.
Her passport was missing.
Bank records showed a cash withdrawal of four thousand dollars two days earlier.
She may have left voluntarily.
She may have prepared to run and been interrupted.
Her car was found at Nashville International Airport.
Parking footage showed Emma entering the terminal alone.
No footage showed her boarding a flight.
At 6:08 the next morning, her phone connected briefly to a tower near Kentucky Lake.
Then disappeared.
Noah sat in my library holding a glass of water he had not touched.
“Did my sister cause what happened to you?”
“No.”
“She told you to come disguised.”
“She gave me instructions. I chose to follow them.”
“She thought Vanessa would expose herself.”
“So did I.”
“What if Emma used you?”
“That possibility must remain open.”
His eyes filled.
“You think she’s part of it?”
“I think love should not require us to eliminate questions before evidence answers them.”
