CHAP 5 — The Chapel Doors Open

The morning of the funeral, I dressed in black and stood in front of the mirror for twenty minutes.
My hands would not stop shaking.
On the dresser were two tiny bracelets from the hospital where Lily and Lucas were born. Pink for Lily. Blue for Lucas. Daniel had joked back then that color labels were unnecessary because “no one could ever mix up our chaos.”
That man no longer existed.
Or maybe he never had.
Maybe grief only stripped away the costume.
I wore my mother’s pearl earrings because she had died before my children were born, and I needed one woman who loved me in the room, even as memory.
Evelyn called at 8:03.
“Everything is ready.”
“Ruiz?”
“In position.”
“The file box?”
“With me.”
She paused.
“Amelia, you do not have to let him speak.”
“Yes,” I said. “I do.”
Daniel arrived late to the chapel.
With Vanessa.
The audacity stunned even people who had defended him.
Whispers moved through the congregation. My sister stood halfway from her pew, but I shook my head once. Not yet.
Daniel walked down the aisle like he owned the tragedy.
He looked at the coffins for less than a second.
Then he looked at me.
His eyes were bloodshot, but not from sorrow.
From whiskey.
From sleepless fear.
From the pressure of a lie beginning to crack.

“God took them because He knew what kind of mother you were,” he hissed.
That line was for the room.
For the narrative.
For every relative who had begun to wonder why Daniel seemed more angry than broken.
I whispered, “Please—just be quiet today.”
He hit me.
The chapel gasped.
Then he grabbed my hair and forced my head down.
The polished coffin wood struck my temple.
Pain burst through my skull.
For one second, I saw Lily’s portrait blur beneath me.
My daughter, smiling forever at three years old.
Daniel bent close.
“Speak again, and you’ll join them.”
He did not know the lapel pin on my jacket was recording.
He did not know Ruiz had requested body-camera entry timing.
He did not know Evelyn stood behind the chapel doors waiting for the moment Daniel revealed threat, motive, and consciousness of guilt in front of eighty witnesses.
He released me when the doors opened.
Detective Ruiz entered like judgment in a dark suit.
Uniformed officers followed.
Evelyn came behind them with the sealed evidence box.
Ruiz’s voice filled the chapel.
“Daniel Mercer and Vanessa Cole, you are under arrest for insurance fraud and first-degree murder.”
Vanessa screamed first.
Daniel turned toward me.
For one second, he looked like he truly expected me to save him.
“What did you do?”
I touched the blood at my temple.
“I listened.”
An officer pulled his hands behind his back.

Handcuffs clicked.
That sound was the first honest prayer spoken in that chapel.
