CHAP 3 — The Smoke Detector

For three seconds, nobody spoke.

Rain hit the windows in hard silver streaks. Mara breathed in short, broken pulls beneath my hand. Evan stared at the smoke detector like it had betrayed him personally.

Celeste recovered first.

“That is illegal,” she snapped.

I looked at her.

“It is inside Mara’s bedroom.”

“It is my son’s house.”

“It is also her residence.”

Evan took one step forward.

I stood.

“Do not.”

His jaw clenched.

“You planted that.”

“I gave it to Mara.”

“So you admit conspiracy.”

“I admit I believed my sister would need proof.”

His eyes flashed.

Celeste reached for her phone.

“Call Harold. Tell him we need Judge Keller now.”

That was how people like the Whitmores survived.

They did not ask what happened.

They asked who could bury it.

I kept my voice clear for the body camera.

“Celeste Whitmore is attempting to contact a judge regarding an active domestic assault scene. Suspect Evan Whitmore is present. Victim is injured and pregnant. Hidden recording device observed in victim’s bedroom smoke detector.”

Evan’s face hardened.

“Turn that thing off.”

“No.”

“This is my property.”

“This is now a crime scene.”

He laughed, but it came out thin.

“You’re out of your depth, Lena.”

I looked down at Mara.

She was watching me now, barely conscious, eyes full of terror and apology.

As if she had failed me by being hurt.

That broke something clean inside me.

“Mara,” I said softly, “did Evan do this?”

Her lips trembled.

Evan moved instantly.

“She’s medicated. She’s confused.”

“She has not been evaluated yet.”

“She’s hysterical.”

I leaned closer to Mara, blocking Evan from her line of sight.

“You can blink once for yes.”

Her eyes closed.

Opened.

Once.

Evan’s breathing changed.

Celeste whispered, “Don’t say another word.”

I turned my head.

“That’s witness intimidation.”

Celeste’s face went pale with fury.

“You have no idea who this family is.”

“I know exactly who this family is,” I said. “That’s why I brought backup.”

Sirens sounded faintly through the storm.

Evan heard them too.

For the first time, panic flickered behind his eyes.

Then he made his second criminal mistake.

He reached for the smoke detector.

I stepped between him and the wall.

“Touch that camera and I add evidence tampering.”

His hand froze.

Outside, blue and red lights swept across the bedroom ceiling.

Mara whispered my name.

I turned back to her.

“I’m here.”

Her hand found mine.

Weak.

May you like

Cold.

Alive.
