Chapter 6 - THE NUMBER MY FATHER LEFT BEHIND

The lockbox contained twelve paper ledgers.

Dad distrusted any system that existed only on a screen.

He called paper “a witness that requires someone to physically burn it.”

Each ledger documented a project.

Invoices.

Material quantities.

Inspection dates.

Names of subcontractors.

Short notes in his compact handwriting.

The Quarry Seven ledger was missing.

In its place lay one torn page.

Across the top, Dad had written:

KEYSTONE TOTAL — 4,006,800.

The known fraudulent transfers totaled $3,984,800.

The difference was twenty-two thousand dollars.

Claire will know which number is wrong.

I reviewed every invoice.

The four-million-dollar figure was not wrong mathematically.

It was wrong conceptually.

One twenty-two-thousand-dollar payment did not belong to Keystone.

It went to a consulting company named Red Lark Safety.

Red Lark had performed a legitimate inspection years earlier and then dissolved.

Someone reused its banking identity after closure.

The payment memo read:

QUARRY RETENTION REVIEW.

The receiving account moved the money within hours to a personal trust.

The beneficiary was not Derek.

Not Marlene.

Not Nolan.

It belonged to Michael Trent, Bennett Urban’s systems director.

Police searched his office.

Michael had disappeared.

Unlike Nolan, he did not return with an attorney.

His apartment was empty.

A suitcase was missing.

His work laptop had been wiped badly enough that portions remained recoverable.

Inside were scripts used to alter audit trails, copy administrator certificates, and create false board-document histories.

Nolan’s certificate had indeed been copied.

That weakened the direct case against him.

It did not explain his calls with Derek or his knowledge of the old key.

Michael’s messages revealed he had been paid by Keystone and North Harbor.

One thread connected him to Derek.

DEREK: CLAIRE IS LOOKING AT ARCHIVES.

MICHAEL: THEN STOP HER BEFORE SHE GETS TO QUARRY.

DEREK: HOW?

MICHAEL: YOUR HOUSE. YOUR WIFE. HANDLE IT.

The message did not order violence explicitly.

It established pressure and coordination.

Another thread connected Michael to an unidentified contact saved only as FOUNDER.

FOUNDER: ARTHUR COPIED THE QUARRY TESTS.

MICHAEL: WHERE?

FOUNDER: HOME OR TRAILER.

MICHAEL: DEREK SAYS CLAIRE IS USELESS.

FOUNDER: GRIEF ENDS. FIND THEM FIRST.

The contact used prepaid devices and routing services.

Investigators could not immediately identify the person.

“Could Founder be Nolan?” I asked Ortiz.

“Possibly.”

“Who else knew Dad copied tests?”

“Grace. Project engineers. Senior executives.”

“Patricia?”

“Potentially.”

“Elena?”

“She knew Arthur maintained private records generally.”

The list made me angry.

Not because everyone was guilty.

Because suspicion began eroding every relationship.

Elena watched my face.

“Do not let uncertainty isolate you.”

“Derek said that too.”

“No. Derek said only he could be trusted.”

“What are you saying?”

“That facts may narrow the list. Until then, you are allowed to set boundaries without declaring everyone an enemy.”

The lockbox also contained a partial letter.

Claire,

If you are reading this, I waited too long to explain what I found. Keystone was not created by Derek, though he used it. The original arrangement began before he joined the company. Nolan says the payments are temporary. I no longer believe—

The page ended.

The remaining section had been torn away.

Dad wrote the letter two days before his fall.

I read the line again.

Nolan says the payments are temporary.

When confronted, Nolan admitted speaking with Dad about Keystone.

“I believed it was a vendor-financing arrangement,” he said through counsel.

“Why hide it?” I asked during a recorded civil interview.

“Arthur feared lender reaction.”

“My father ordered the project stopped.”

“Later.”

“Did you reverse the order?”

“No.”

“Did you know Derek forged my approval?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Derek the old reserve key might work?”

“I told him historical systems sometimes retain authority.”

“Why would you tell a suspended executive anything?”

“He was not suspended then.”

“He had just assaulted me.”

“I did not know that.”

“You received his call from my house.”

“He said you attacked him.”

“Did you believe him?”

Nolan looked toward his attorney.

“I believed a domestic incident had occurred.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No.”

“Then why help?”

His expression finally cracked.

“Because North Harbor would have called our loans Monday morning.”

“So you allowed a possible unauthorized transfer?”

“I believed Derek had spousal and executive authority.”

“You spent twenty-two years beside my father. You know marriage does not create banking authority.”

Nolan lowered his eyes.

“I was trying to preserve the company.”

The sentence appeared everywhere.

Preserve the company.

As though an institution had become a patient whose survival justified harming everyone attached to it.

Nolan was not charged that day.

The evidence showed catastrophic judgment.

Whether it proved knowing conspiracy remained unresolved.

Then police found Michael Trent’s rental car near the airport.

Inside the trunk lay the missing Quarry Seven ledger.

The final three pages had been removed.
