Chapter 3 - SUITE 1908
Detective Brooks obtained a warrant for Suite 1908 based on Sofia’s statement, visible injuries, the hotel’s observations, and the timing discrepancy in the notarization.
The room remained sealed until crime-scene technicians arrived.
The warrant authorized collection of evidence related to assault, unlawful restraint, threats, and attempted property transfer. It did not permit investigators to search unrelated guest data throughout the hotel.
Suite 1908 was a wedding package room with marble counters, champagne glasses, rose petals, and a panoramic view of downtown Dallas.
The elegance made the damage more disturbing.
A chair lay on its side near the bedroom door.
A strip of torn satin matched the missing section of Sofia’s dress.
A blood-stained washcloth rested in the bathroom sink.
On the floor beneath a side table, investigators found one of Sofia’s pearl hairpins and a broken piece of gold chain.
The cream property folder had been removed when Sofia escaped with it.
But copies remained in the hotel printer tray.
The documents included a quitclaim deed transferring the Uptown condo from Sofia Alvarez to a limited-liability company called Robles Family Residential Holdings.
Another document granted Javier durable authority over Sofia’s financial affairs.
A third created a marital property agreement assigning all real estate acquired before or during marriage to a family management structure controlled by Carmen.
None bore Sofia’s completed signature.
However, the signature blocks contained faint impressions.
Someone had placed a signed page on top of the documents and traced pressure over it.
Investigators found no belt, rod, or obvious instrument in the room.
Sofia had described being struck with an open hand, a leather strap, and something flexible she could not identify while her face was covered.
The search recovered a long silk sash from a garment bag and a narrow decorative belt from Carmen’s formal dress.
Both were collected for examination.
Physical comparison might support possibilities.
It would not establish who used them without additional evidence.
Hotel surveillance showed the bridal party entering shortly after midnight.
Sofia and Javier entered Suite 1908 at 12:18 a.m.
Javier left at 12:37.
At 12:52, Carmen entered with six women.
At 12:56, the hallway camera showed Javier returning. He remained outside the room, speaking twice through the door.
At 1:08, a hotel guest stepped into the hallway, heard raised voices, and then returned to her room after Javier said the bride was having a panic attack.
At 1:12, a service elevator opened.
Sofia stumbled into the corridor barefoot, carrying the folder against her chest.
A housekeeper entered behind her, looked toward the suite, then pressed the elevator button.
Sofia exited on a lower service floor and left through the loading area.
No camera showed how she reached my apartment.
The route was nearly three miles.
A city bus driver later remembered a woman in a torn wedding dress boarding without shoes. He allowed her to ride because she seemed injured and frightened.
From the bus stop, Sofia walked six blocks.
The hotel key logs showed something else.
The suite door was opened with seven digital keys.
Carmen.
Alicia Robles.
Rosa Delgado.
Teresa Robles.
Inés Moya.
Lucía Santos.
And a key issued under the name Miriam Holt.
No one in Javier’s family acknowledged knowing Miriam Holt.
The hotel booking had been made through a corporate account belonging to Del Oro Legal Consulting, a firm that leased office space from Javier’s law practice.
The company’s registered manager was Carmen.
Its financial guarantor was a man named Victor Salazar.
Detective Brooks asked Alexander whether he knew the name.
His expression changed.
“Victor once tried to purchase the condo.”
“When?”
“Before I transferred it to Sofia.”
“Why?”
“He represented an investment group buying units in that building.”
“Did you sell?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because the proposed sale documents contained obligations that extended beyond the unit.”
“What obligations?”
Alexander looked at me.
I realized he had never told either of us.
“The condo carries voting rights in the building’s redevelopment trust,” he said. “If enough units consolidate under one owner, that owner can force a major sale.”
“How much is the redevelopment worth?”
“Potentially hundreds of millions.”
The $1.8 million condo was valuable.
Its hidden voting position was worth far more to the right person.
Alexander claimed he transferred the unit to Sofia because dispersing ownership prevented any one investor from controlling the building.
Detective Brooks studied him.
“You gave your daughter property as part of a business defense?”
“I gave her a secure home.”
“That is not the same answer.”
Alexander did not respond.
For the first time, I understood that Carmen might not have chosen Sofia only because she was wealthy.
Someone had chosen her because of a legal right attached to her address.
At the hospital, Sofia woke from a short sleep and asked whether Javier had called.
“No,” I said.
He had called fourteen times.
I had not answered.
“He’ll say he didn’t know.”
“He admitted being outside.”
“He always says he didn’t know what his mother would do.”
“Do you believe him?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I believed him yesterday.”
A victim advocate helped Sofia seek an emergency protective order against Javier and Carmen. The judge granted temporary restrictions based on the allegations and scheduled a fuller hearing.
The order barred direct and indirect contact.
It did not decide criminal guilt.
It did not dissolve the marriage.
It did not automatically prevent every property filing.
Alexander contacted a real-estate attorney to place fraud alerts and request emergency notice concerning any attempt to record a deed against the condo.
At 11:46 a.m., the county clerk’s office reported that an electronic deed had already been submitted.
The document bore Sofia’s digital signature.
