“No.”

“I regret not telling you what I suspected.”
She looked toward me.
“You used me as a test.”
“I used the cameras as a test.”
“You knew they would blame me.”
“I believed they might.”
“And you let me enter without knowing?”
The question hurt because it was fair.
“I thought controls would protect everyone.”
“Controls protect records.”
She looked at Noah.
“They do not protect reputation before people read them.”
I sat beside her.
“You’re right.”
She studied me.
Most powerful people apologize by explaining why their decision was reasonable.
I did not.
“I should have told you that my family might exploit your history. I made a risk decision involving your life without your full consent.”
Maya’s expression softened only slightly.

Maya looked at the files.
“I helped people like him once.”
“You paid for it,” I said.
“Not everyone harmed by those records was repaid.”
“No.”
She did not ask me to declare her redeemed.
That made her more trustworthy than anyone insisting one good act erased earlier guilt.

VIVIENNE: HER RECORD IS WHY I ALLOWED CLARA TO KEEP HER.
Vivienne had not merely tolerated Maya.
