Chapter 4 - THIRTY MINUTES MISSING

Emma spent two nights in the hospital.

Her cardiologist determined that she had experienced a heat-related stress episode with a dangerous rhythm disturbance, but the available data could not prove exactly how close she came to cardiac arrest.

No one needed a dramatic estimate.

The truth was enough.

Heat, fear, dehydration, and missed access to her medication had placed her at serious risk.

Her nadolol bottle was found inside our house, on the kitchen counter where Elena had left it after returning from the pharmacy at 3:12.

Elena entered through the garage, called Emma’s name, and heard nothing.

She assumed Ruth had taken her next door.

By the time Elena saw the commotion outside, I was already cutting the lock.

Her mistake was ordinary.

She had not looked toward the porch because the curtains blocked the view from the kitchen.

Ordinary mistakes often create openings for deliberate harm.

Emma’s formal interview took place at a child advocacy center after her doctors agreed she was medically stable.

I watched from another room with Ranger Cho and a child-abuse investigator.

The interviewer, Carla Wynn, began with simple questions about truth and memory.

She did not mention the chain.

She did not mention Diana.

“Tell me why you came here,” Carla said.

Emma rubbed the moon-shaped sticker on her water bottle.

“Because people want to know about the porch.”

“Tell me everything you remember.”

Emma explained that Ruth had been sitting with her in our living room while Elena collected the prescription.

Ruth stepped next door to turn off a sprinkler she had forgotten.

“I stayed inside like Daddy said.”

“What happened next?”

“I heard a crash.”

The sound came from outside.

Emma looked through the front window and saw a large ceramic planter broken near the common walkway.

Diana stood beside it.

“She said I did it.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did you go outside?”

Emma nodded.

“I wanted to tell her it wasn’t me.”

“What happened then?”

Diana said Emma had violated community property rules and needed to wait for an adult review.

Emma tried to return inside.

Diana grabbed the blue tablet from her hands.

“What were you doing with the tablet?”

“Making a video for Dad.”

“What kind of video?”

“Mrs. Gable’s birds.”

Ruth had several feeders near the side fence. Emma liked recording cardinals and doves.

“Did your video show anything else?”

“A truck.”

“What truck?”

“A white one by the little HOA house.”

The clubhouse stood across from Ruth’s side yard.

Emma said Diana and a man were carrying boxes from the clubhouse into the truck. She zoomed in because the man wore a county-gray polo similar to shirts used by emergency management volunteers.

“Did Diana see you recording?”

“She yelled.”

“What did she say?”

“Give me that.”

Emma ran toward our porch.

Diana followed, took the tablet, and accused her of breaking the planter during the chase.

“She said I had to stay until Dad came.”

“How did the chain get around you?”

Emma began breathing faster.

Carla slowed the interview.

“You can take a break.”

Emma shook her head.

“Diana got it from her little cart. She said it was for dangerous things.”

The chain had been stored in a golf cart Diana used for HOA inspections.

Emma said Diana wrapped it around the pillar and her waist. When Emma cried and said her heart felt wrong, Diana looked at the monitor and told her to stop pretending.

Ruth returned as Diana closed the brass lock.

Ruth tried to pull the chain away.

Diana threatened to report her for assault and trespassing.

Ruth called 911.

“Did anyone else come?”

“A man was in the truck.”

“Did you see his face?”

“No.”

“Did he say anything?”

“He told Diana, ‘Keep him angry.’”

“Who is him?”

“I don’t know.”

The interview ended without anyone asking Emma to guess.

Afterward, Cho told me the doorbell camera on our porch had stopped recording between 2:41 and 3:22.

The system showed a manual settings change.

I had not made it.

Elena had not.

The account password had been reset using a recovery code sent to my county email.

That email had been opened at 2:38 from an internal county network.

Someone inside a county-connected system had disabled the camera three minutes before Diana confronted Emma.
