Chapter 4 - HANNAH PIERCE DID NOT RUN AWAY
Hannah’s disappearance became a formal missing-person investigation.
Greg had never filed a report.
He told neighbors, the school, and medical providers that she left voluntarily. He produced the email renouncing contact and claimed she took clothing, jewelry, and cash.
Emily Pierce challenged each detail.
Hannah hated flying and had not renewed her passport.
Her personal bank account showed no transactions after January 18.
Her phone stopped connecting to cellular networks that same night.
Her car was involved in a fatal crash three days later.
That fact stunned everyone because Greg had never mentioned it.
The vehicle was found burned in a ravine outside Rockford. The body inside was too badly damaged for visual identification. Dental records supplied through Greg matched Hannah.
Authorities ruled the death an accident after determining the car left an icy road at high speed.
Greg collected a $750,000 life-insurance benefit.
Emily believed her sister died in the crash.
So did the state.
Why, then, did Greg tell Lily and everyone else that Hannah abandoned them?
His attorney said he wanted to protect Lily from the trauma of her mother’s death.
The explanation might have sounded compassionate without the basement, the boots, and the burned shoes.
The crash file was reopened.
The original medical examiner had relied on dental charts faxed by Hannah’s dentist. Investigators discovered the records came from a private clinic called Westbridge Family Health, where Hannah received both dental and behavioral services.
The dentist who signed the identification had retired and moved overseas.
The body had been cremated according to instructions Greg said Hannah made in a will.
No copy of that will could be found.
The cremains remained in an urn at Greg’s house.
DNA testing might still be possible from retained tissue samples collected during autopsy. The county lab began locating them.
There was another problem.
The woman in the car wore a silver medical bracelet engraved with the initials H.P.
Emily said Hannah never wore one.
Police photographs showed red high-heeled shoes in the passenger footwell.
The shoes had not burned completely.
The red shoes destroyed behind Greg’s garage were a different pair.
Someone had wanted the crash victim associated with Hannah.
Association is not identification.
While investigators rebuilt the crash timeline, the digital team examined Greg’s home cameras.
The basement recordings were the first priority.
The drives contained months of footage.
Some files had been deleted.
The recovered portions showed Lily confined in the room for periods ranging from twenty minutes to nearly fourteen hours.
Greg called it the quiet room.
He required her to sit facing the wall.
If she moved, cried, or slept before permission, he restarted a timer.
Hannah appeared in several early recordings.
She argued with Greg.
She unlocked the door.
She carried Lily upstairs.
Then, six weeks before the crash, Hannah stopped appearing.
The final video containing her was recorded at 11:43 p.m.
She entered the basement alone and looked directly into the camera.
“If anyone sees this, Greg has been hurting Lily. I have photographs and copies of everything. I am leaving tomorrow.”
She glanced toward the stairs.
“He knows about Emily. I cannot go there.”
Then the recording ended.
There was no footage of Hannah leaving the house.
The camera system went offline for seven hours.
When it resumed, Greg carried Lily into the basement.
Lily was crying for her mother.
Greg told her, “She chose freedom over you.”
He repeated that sentence until Lily said it back.
The video did not show what happened to Hannah.
It established that Greg’s abandonment narrative began after Hannah planned to escape.
Police found no photographs or copies among the seized records.
Whatever Hannah created had been removed.
During a supervised visit, Emily asked Lily whether her mother gave her anything before she disappeared.
The child’s face closed immediately.
“No questions,” the social worker reminded her.
Emily apologized.
Later, while Sarah changed a dressing, Lily pointed toward the evidence bags containing the cut boots.
“Mommy said rain keeps secrets.”
Sarah did not ask what she meant.
She documented the spontaneous statement and notified Detective Brooks.
The boots had already been photographed, dried under controlled conditions, and packaged individually.
The left boot had contained the strongest medical evidence.
The right boot appeared less important.
A forensic technician reexamined it.
