Chapter 15 - THE FILE THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE EXISTED

Detective Harris arrived the next day with a digital-forensics specialist.

Margaret joined by video from her apartment.

Elena sat beside me.

The technician created a verified copy of the recovered partition and opened the directory.

Most files were fragments.

System checks.

Failed updates.

Environmental readings.

Then a folder appeared with no ordinary timestamp.

M-ARCHIVE-2.

“Was that part of your naming structure?” Harris asked.

“No.”

The folder required a password.

The system’s key manager contained one recovered hint:

GREEN DRESS / BLACK STONE.

Margaret leaned closer to her screen.

“The day Adrian came.”

The technician entered the date associated with Vanessa’s green dress and the serial number from Adrian’s black-stone ring, which investigators had photographed during his arrest processing.

The folder opened.

Inside were nine short video files.

Not from my house.

The first showed a bedroom I did not recognize.

An elderly man sat beside a window while a woman placed papers before him.

No audio.

The second showed a different kitchen.

A caregiver stood near a locked door.

The third displayed a bank statement held close to a lens.

Halcyon Advisory Group appeared at the top.

Harris’s expression changed.

“These may involve other victims.”

“Who uploaded them?” Elena asked.

The metadata listed an administrative user:

AC-17.

Adrian Cole’s initials.

The technician cautioned that account labels could be forged.

Then he opened the eighth file.

The image came from my own upstairs hallway during the forty-three-minute gap.

Adrian entered Margaret’s bedroom.

His face was clear.

He carried a leather folder.

Vanessa followed.

Dr. Reeves arrived four minutes later.

All three were inside the room together.

Margaret covered her mouth.

The video had no sound.

But it proved the missing period contained more than a document review.

In the final minute, Adrian exited alone.

He looked directly toward the hidden camera.

Then reached up and removed something from behind the detector.

A small storage card.

“He knew where the backup was,” I said.

“Apparently,” Harris answered.

The final file was audio only.

At first, static filled the room.

Then Vanessa’s voice emerged.

“Daniel will come home eventually.”

A man answered.

Not Adrian.

Older.

Calmer.

“If the refinery extension is signed, we have another year.”

Elena looked at me.

I recognized the voice.

Not from my house.

From conference calls.

Board meetings.

Twenty years of work.

Thomas Vail, chairman of the engineering company that employed Adrian and me.

The man who personally encouraged me to accept the Saudi extension.

Vanessa continued:

“And if Daniel refuses?”

Thomas answered:

“Then Margaret’s transfer must happen before he understands what Halcyon really is.”

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Thomas had attended Vanessa’s trial.

He sat behind company counsel and told reporters he was devastated by Adrian’s betrayal.

His name had never appeared in the criminal case.

Harris stood.

“We need to preserve this and verify the voice before anyone is contacted.”

My phone vibrated on the desk.

A message appeared from the front-gate system at our new home.

VISITOR REQUESTING ACCESS.

Elena looked toward the security screen.

A black sedan waited outside.

Thomas Vail stood at the gate holding a bottle of wine and a white envelope.

He smiled toward the camera.

My phone rang.

His name appeared.

Margaret’s voice came through the laptop.

“Daniel, don’t let him in.”

I stared at the man outside.

Thomas lifted the envelope toward the lens.

Across the front, in Vanessa’s handwriting, were five words:

FOR DANIEL, IF THE SECOND ARCHIVE OPENS.

Elena reached for my hand.

Harris signaled the technician to continue recording.

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then Thomas stopped smiling and looked directly into the gate camera as though he knew we were watching.

I accepted the call.

Neither of us spoke at first.

Finally, Thomas said:

“Daniel, before you open that envelope, you need to understand why Vanessa was never the person in charge.”

The gate alarm changed from green to red.

Someone had entered a master override code.

The lock began to release.
