Chapter 1 - THE BELT

The leather belt struck my shoulder before I could lift my arm.
The crack filled the bedroom.
Pain spread beneath the satin strap of my pajamas and burned down my back. I remained on my knees, one hand pressed into the carpet, the other protecting my ribs.
Adrian stood above me with the belt doubled in his fist.
The dark bruise on my cheek came from the first blow—his open hand twenty minutes earlier, when I refused to sign the folder waiting on the table.
“You embarrassed Vanessa,” he shouted. “Now, I’m going to teach you some manners.”
Vanessa laughed from the armchair.
She had not removed her heels or evening jewelry after returning from the Ashford Foundation dinner. Her champagne-colored dress looked untouched. She watched me as if humiliation were the final entertainment of the night.
I looked at Adrian.
My husband’s shirt sleeves were rolled to his elbows. His wedding ring flashed each time the belt moved.
“You brought her into our bedroom,” I said.
“You accused her in front of investors.”
“She was wearing my mother’s bracelet.”
Vanessa lifted her wrist.
The diamond bracelet had disappeared from my jewelry case two months earlier. Adrian told me I had misplaced it during renovations.
Vanessa admired it beneath the lamp.
“After the divorce, maybe he’ll be generous.”
Adrian raised the belt again.
I reached for the phone lying near my knee.
He stepped forward.
“Touch that and I swear—”
I closed my fingers around it and forced myself upright.
The room tilted. My cheek throbbed. My shoulder felt split open beneath the fabric, but I remained standing.
Adrian pointed toward the blue folder on the dressing table.
“Sign it, and leave with nothing.”
The first page said MARITAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT.
I had seen enough of the remaining pages to know they were not only about divorce.
Adrian had refused to let me read them.
I unlocked my phone.
Vanessa’s confidence faltered.
“What are you doing?”
I pressed my father’s name.
The video call connected immediately.
Richard Ashford appeared on the screen in an executive suit, his tie still knotted as though he had been waiting beside his phone.
His eyes found the bruise.
Then the belt.
Then Vanessa.
Adrian stopped moving.
“Dad,” I said.
My voice shook once.
I made it steady.
“Just as you told me—destroy his life.”
My father did not look surprised.
He said only:
“Move away from the folder, Elena.”
Adrian’s phone began ringing.
He glanced at the screen.
ASHFORD MERIDIAN BOARD COUNSEL.
He rejected it.
Another call arrived from the company’s security director.
Then the bank.
Then an unknown federal number.
Adrian answered the board counsel.
“This is Adrian Vale.”
He listened.
His face lost color.
“What do you mean suspended?”
A second phone began vibrating on the table—Vanessa’s.
She looked down.
Her expression changed.
Adrian’s fingers opened.
The belt fell.
He sank to his knees.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered into the phone. “Richard can’t do that without a vote.”
My father’s voice came through my screen.
“The vote occurred eleven minutes ago.”
Vanessa rushed toward the folder.
I stepped between her and the table.
“Don’t touch it.”
She stopped.
For the first time that night, she looked afraid of me.
A car door slammed outside.
Then another.
Blue light moved across the curtains.
Adrian looked toward the window.
“You called the police?”
“I called my father.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“I called the police.”
Heavy footsteps entered the hallway below.
Vanessa backed toward the bathroom.
Adrian reached for my ankle.
“Elena, listen to me. You don’t understand what your father just started.”
I moved away from his hand.
“You hit me with a belt.”
“That folder protects both of us.”
“From what?”
He looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
An officer knocked and announced himself.
My father spoke before I answered.
“Elena, leave the papers where they are. Especially the last page.”
“Why?”
May you like
His eyes remained on Adrian.
“Because that page is the reason he needed you frightened before midnight.”
