Chapter 4 - THE EMPTY SPACE IN THE TANK

Halcyon initially described the discrepancy as an indexing error.

Rachel requested complete cryostorage records, chain-of-custody forms, electronic access logs, transfer authorizations, courier documents, and video preservation.

The clinic’s attorneys resisted broad disclosure, citing other patients’ privacy.

The court ordered production limited to my account and any transfer involving the missing embryo.

The records showed that the embryo had left storage five months earlier.

A courier transported it from California to Halcyon’s Chicago affiliate.

The authorization bore my electronic signature.

I had been in Lake Forest attending a Vale Foundation luncheon at the time.

Naomi found photographs placing me onstage when the authorization was signed.

Adrian stood beside me during the luncheon.

Celeste disappeared for forty minutes.

The transfer form used a scanned copy of my driver’s license and a consent signature captured from an earlier treatment cycle.

The receiving physician was Leon Mercer.

The intended recipient’s name had been redacted in the first production.

The judge ordered it disclosed under seal.

Sienna Holt.

I stared at the page until the letters blurred.

Sienna had worked for six months as a patient liaison at Halcyon’s Chicago clinic. She left shortly after becoming pregnant.

Her attorney said she believed the embryo came from an anonymous donor program and that all consents were valid.

Her public behavior at the ballroom suggested more confidence than innocence.

But arrogance was not proof of what she knew.

The court appointed independent counsel to protect her medical privacy and interests.

The criminal investigation expanded into suspected reproductive fraud, forgery, unauthorized access to medical records, and conspiracy.

Illinois required strict conditions for enforceable gestational-surrogacy arrangements, including separate legal counsel, written certification, screening, and execution before medication or transfer.

No valid agreement had been filed.

The black-folder document attempted to create one after the pregnancy had already begun.

It named Sienna as intended mother.

It named Adrian as intended father.

It described the egg source inconsistently.

And it required me to waive every parental, genetic, financial, and trust-related claim.

Adrian did not merely need my signature for appearances.

He needed it to repair a process that had never been lawful.

Elena remained in the NICU for twelve days.

I visited in a wheelchair because my incision and bruising made walking difficult. Each time I touched her through the incubator opening, the larger case receded.

She was not an heir.

She was a premature baby learning to breathe and eat.

Adrian petitioned for visitation.

The family judge allowed one supervised hospital visit after reviewing the safety plan. Two officers remained nearby.

He stood beside Elena’s incubator and cried.

Watching him hurt.

His tears might have been real.

Real emotion did not undo deliberate violence.

Afterward, he approached me in the supervised conference room.

“You need to sign the agreement.”

“You stole our embryo.”

“I saved it.”

“From whom?”

“You.”

My body went cold.

“You were going to let it remain frozen forever.”

“We had not decided.”

“You decided every time you postponed.”

“That did not give you permission.”

“Sienna wanted a child.”

“You wanted control.”

He leaned closer.

“The boy she is carrying is healthy.”

A boy.

I had not known the embryo’s sex.

Adrian had.

“The trust recognizes a child born from both family lines,” he said. “Elena is not mine.”

“The test was fabricated.”

“You cannot prove I knew.”

“Is Sienna carrying our son?”

His face changed before he answered.

“She is carrying the future.”

The phrase sounded rehearsed.

Rachel ended the meeting.

That evening, an independent genetic laboratory received court-authorized samples from me, Adrian, and—through a limited noninvasive process—Sienna’s pregnancy.

The preliminary result arrived under seal.

The fetus Sienna carried was genetically mine.

The second parent was Adrian.

The man who punched my daughter before birth had stolen our remaining embryo and placed our son inside another woman.
