Chapter 21 - LEO’S FIRST FEVER

Leo was two when he developed another fever.
101.9.
Runny nose.
Still playing.
Our pediatrician said likely viral.
Monitor.
Fluids.
Call if worsening.
I could not breathe.
My body returned to the locked room.
Adam found me sitting beside Leo’s crib holding the thermometer.
“Chloe.”
“He’s hot.”
“I know.”
“What if—”
“He’s two.”
“I know.”
“We have the doctor’s instructions.”
“I know.”
“You want to go in anyway?”
“Yes.”
We went.
Urgent care said viral.
No serious infection.
No judgment.
The physician told me:
“Given history, coming in is understandable.”
No one called me dramatic.
No one used fear as diagnosis.
Leo recovered in two days.
That ordinary fever healed something the criminal case could not.
Not every temperature was conspiracy.
May you like
Not every sleepiness was sedation.
My son could simply get sick.
